I could be wrong but wasn't Dana and co. insisting that Johnson fight as a welterweight years ago ? Johnson felt he would be better off fighting as a light heavyweight and the UFC felt otherwise. Fast forward a couple of years and Rumble is back and about to get a shot at Jon Jones. Turns out Rumble was right about which weight class he should fight in. It was the other way around, Rumble insisted he should fight at 170 despite missing weight by >5 lbs twice. UFC was insisting he try 185, and when he finally agreed to goto 185 he AGAIN missed weight, this time by 11 lbs. Then UFC shitcanned him, then he went to a feeder org and missed 185 by like 10 lbs again before FINALLY trying 205 where he's been an absolute beast ever since.

I knew there were some weight cutting issues but largely forgot the surrounding circumstances.

He must have been putting his body through hell for that

He must have been putting his body through hell for that Well its insane to cut from 220 to 170 and when missed weight for his first post UFC release fight there was some talk if he had f***ed up his body with all those ridiculous weight cuts. Mind you when he returned to the UFC last year Dana White publicly stated that if failed to make weight he was up for a lifetime ban.

Gustafsson losing easily was such a shock and Amirkhani's running knee was my fav move of the night. Right out of of the bat. BOOM!
