Was watching some of the RAW's they have on the Network, and man - I forgot how awesome Goldust actually was when he really got into the character and started playing up the "is he or isn't he?" stuff, like with Razor, crawling around and trying to lift Piper's kilt up, trying to touch the Warrior's pecs, kissing Ahmed Johnson. I laugh at it now because Goldust is so damn awesome and Dustin really, really threw all of himself into the character. At the time I was creeped out, even if they did try to spin it on commentary as "you don't become Intercontinental Champion without being a great athlete, these are mind games".
I really loved how far they tried to push how far they could go with him. Especially in that transitional era where they were getting a little bit edgier but nowhere near as much as they would eventually.

An amazing character. Pushed the envelope, but it was great stuff. One of the all time great wrestling characters.

I was watching some Raws from 1996 and caught up on the Goldust/Undertaker feud, and he made Taker look plain and normal. Just seeing Goldust do things like grab Paul Bearer's ass and unbutton his shirt, then hold Undertaker's hand and mount him... It was the first time I've gotten legit uncomfortable watching wrestling in a long time. How Taker kept a straight face the ENTIRE time, I don't know how he did it.

Definitely envelope pushing and memorable stuff, especially for wrestling at the time, love Goldust. But also kind of funny that this kind of character is pretty much Dr. Frank N. Furter from Rocky Horror in 1975. 20 years later, so in the grand scheme of things Goldust isn't really ahead of his time, but in the context of wrestling he still is.
Anyhoo, I hope Goldust gets a bit of a singles run before he retires. He is great right now, I'm just kind of bored of the tag-team division match ups.

1996 as a whole was fantastic. Minus Super-Shawn. Definitely agree about Goldust. He was so good at making you feel uncomfortable, almost like watching a twisted villain from a suspense film as a wrestler.

i've been making my way through 1995 and 1996 RAWs and holy shit, do things begin to change in late 1995. we go from rad radford and sparky plugg to sunny in a bathtub and goldust writing poems about piper's dick.

The character was very innovative (for wrestling) and entertaining. Tapping into homophobia to get heat though leaves me a little uncomfortable watching it back today.

I was super young at the time so I didn't really understand it, but I look back on it now and love it.
On the flip side (bit off topic) I was a little HBK fan at the time, but adult me probably would've hated his boyhood dream character. Great matches though.

Great matches and held the company together at a time when the roster wasn't that strong until Bret came back and the Austin feud kicked off. I used to think 97 was my favorite year, and it's probably the best considering WCW and ECW at the time, but 1996 might be my favorite year in WWE history.

Goldust is legitimately my favourite gimmick character in all of wrestling, and in 1996 Dustin just knocked it out of the park every single time.

I loved how he creeped everyone out and his constant mind games made him on of the most unusual characters of the time. He played the part so well that him winning the IC title in his first major feud was justifiable.

This time period really saw wrestling start to change.
During the same time priod there was another guy that made you feel uncomfortable and say "was that supposed to happen" but in a different way...Brian Pillman.
Which is wierd as Brian's last feud and irrc match was with Goldust.

Kids loved HBK because he was sorta like a superhero. He wore flashy clothing, he was the face who was flying around the ring, had cool moves, HBK was awesome back then as a kid.

He was godawful in the ring, sadly. Although bizarrely one of his better matches in '96 was on a Raw against Warrior, so go figure THAT out.
Character-wise, though, yup...much like Taker, Dustin had Goldust nailed down from the start.

In fairness to Dustin, that character could have killed a lesser man.

In fairness to Dustin, that character could have killed a lesser man. It was a character that had no business being as great or long lived as it has been. I is definitive proof of what a great performer he is that he was able to do the things he has done with such a gimmick. That said, I take the original Goldust, "The Bizarre One," over the comedy act he has become today. But I can also see where the character would be no where near as effective today as it was then-kind of strange to realize how different the social attitudes of 96 where compared to today.

Another thing is that if you watched white meat babyface "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes from WCW, and see how completely different Dustin was when he became Goldust, it doesn't surprise me that people at first didn't know Dustin was Goldust under the paint.

I fully agree. It's the original character I love, not so much the one today. Those vignetts man, they were a thing of beauty. There would be no point expanding on his character today anyway, as he's in his mid-forties and basically just a low card tag team act.

I heard that originally, the character was going to be a tamer but still weird Hollywood-type that somehow got psychologically stuck playing one of his roles, which would be Goldust.
Which would have been brilliant in its own right. But whoever changed the direction of the character created possibly the second best character in WWE history after Undertaker.
