It's not really begun "a dialogue to make safe happen for children everywhere", though. It's just been people saying it was depressing as hell and/or making memes with that image. I wouldn't deem it a "success" if most of the conversation is just how awful Nationwide is and/or funny memes featuring the dead kid. If anything, that's a failure when people discuss your commercial, but not because of the intention you had in mind.

I got the impression from the Twitterverse last night that this commercial aired right after one which basically said "Kids can do anything!!"
So yeah, REALLY bad placement made this much worse than it would've been if it was aired during a boring break after the Jabberjaw/Voltron/Bam Bam Bigelow halftime show.

Sounds like the commercial did its job then. It's not really begun "a dialogue to make safe happen for children everywhere", though. It's just been people saying it was depressing as hell and/or making memes with that image. I also have not switched to Nationwide.

I don't mean to seem harsh but just reading reaction to this was basically: OMG I WAS REMINDED DEATH IS A THING THAT HAPPENS TO KIDS. GO BACK TO THINGS I WANT TO THINK ABOUT! Which I understand the emotion but I think the anger is misplaced. People don't like to think about children dying though we all know it happens. I'm assuming that the majority or of people that complained about Nationwide using this for an add topic would have been upset with a PSA on the same topic. Basically saying how dare you interrupt my entertainment with unpleasant things.

Who should be glad about this commercial is Nissan after a commercial declaring them the official car of absentee parents is not getting near the negative buzz it should be getting.

It's just been people saying it was depressing as hell and/or making memes with that image. Well, most companies who purchase ads during the superbowl desperately want to stand out and be noticed amongst the dozens of other ads. So while most commericals will go for funny or sexy or whatever, Nationwide counterprogrammed that by going for a sombre tone, making them stand out more than most other ads. For me, I didn't even watch the superbowl and this ad was the most talked about one I've seen online. Call me cynical, but I don't think the point of ads like that are to doing any kind of societal good, just to get people talking about the product/company. And in advertising, 90% of the battle is just getting people to remember the product's name. If they accomplished that at all, then it was a success. Plus in a few weeks people will have forgotten about the commerical, but "Nationwide" will still be bouncing around in their head if they're thinking about switching or buying new insurance. Plus I thought it was a good commerical. I don't know what the big problem with it is other than it "bummed some people out."

Who should be glad about this commercial is Nissan after a commercial declaring them the official car of absentee parents is not getting near the negative buzz it should be getting. And people have dubbed it one of the best commercials of the night. It's more of the intent of the commercial, where it lulls you into a sense of security about the lamentations of childhood, and then you turn around and hit the person over the head with a downer. These things happen, but there's a time and a place to discuss them, yet no matter when it's the case, people get mad. I remember an ad campaign about 9 years ago in Indiana that had a home video focus where a girl drowns in a bathtub and a baby is unresponsive, which got negative complaints. All in all, shock value is an automatic failure in explaining your point. Yet, people still go to it.

What? Kids are "accident" prone and when they die in an "accident" you'd want to have a policy with Nationwide! This killed the atmosphere at the party I attended. If I was at a party with my friends during the game we all would've paused to go "Huh?!" but then after that we all started laughing and shitting on he ad.

This killed the atmosphere at the party I attended. Same. Honest to god, when the commercial finished airing, the room was silent for a few seconds until a girl remarked "...that wasn't funny." It could have been worse, she could have been laughing really loudly.

Right ad.....wrong f***in time.
If the whole purpose of it was to "Harsh Your Super Bowl Buzz" to draw attention to their app as CMO of Nationwide Mark Jauchius says...well enjoy your damn backlash.

Why do news outlets keep finding "people upset at advertisement" to be a story worth publishing? People have right to be upset or even offended by it, that doesn't make their lack of a backbone important. Oh no, some people were slightly bummed out for 30 seconds before moving on and going back to their show! The World must know!

The commercial I thought the commercial was fantastic personally. Considering your gimmick here on the forum, I could say that is not surprising. I agree, however, so here's a like for your post.
