A term that can be credited to Podcaster Korey Colemen. The term comes from when Eddie Murphy was nominated for an Oscar for Dreamgirls and between the nomination and the ceremony itself the movie Norbit came out. People claim that this hurt Murphy's chances of taking the award.
It can be bad timing or the studio rushing out something really bad (maybe a film that was in limbo cause of how bad it was) to cash in on that there is a Oscar nominated actor in the movie. A couple of years ago it happened to Hugh Jackman who should have won for Les Miserable in my opinion. But then Movie 43 came out shortly before the Oscars which almost everyone agrees is terrible and it features Jackman with testicules on his face. Did it hurt his chances? I don't even know how Oscar voting works. But the timing of it.
Any other examples

Since we're in wrestling bubble, Getting it out of the way: Mickey Rourke making the challenge to Chris Jericho at the Golden Globes. Yes, it wasn't a "movie", per se- but Rourke leaking he'd be doing something at Wrestlemania 25 probably cost him the Oscar for "The Wrestler" and it was even thought to have at the time.

Yeah no, Jackman was never ever winning over Daniel Day Lewis. He could have died saving 900000 orphans and DDL would have been given the award.

They tried with Sandra Bullock and All About Steve, but she still won... for some reason.

It could potentially happen with Eddie Redmayne and Jupiter Rising.

I really don't think things like this actually damage award chances. Academy people don't watch movies like Norbit.

Gary Oldman likely lost a few nominations over the years due to him taking any role. Sure, he was great in them, but The Unborn and Red Riding Hood using "Academy award nominee" may have upset the space/time continuum.

I really don't think things like this actually damage award chances. Academy people don't watch movies like Norbit. I would think they do have to watch those kind of movies, because a movie like Norbit could be nominated for something like best make up or special effects, one of the minor awards. Plus top critics tend to watch literally everything. Which is why Richard Roeper has a Norbit review on his site.

And you might watch something like Norbit for make up, but only if it was submitted for consideration.

I've read that most Academy voters don't listen to the Best Song nominees and leave it up to their kids.
January and February are traditional dumping grounds for bad movies. Just coincidence.

That's not really true though, several reknown critics have talked about being part of the Academy. Ebert was. It's a moot point though; they don't have to watch the films to form opinions of that nature. There have been interviews in the past where voters admitted to voting or not voting for films for tons of different reasons beyond the film itself. "He's won too many, I'm not voting for him no matter what." I think it was Patton Oswalt that mentioned on Conan? Maybe Leno, that he voted for one just because he knew someone in it and never actually watched it.

Not a 'worst thing ever' bad, or a bad thats even salvageable, just a bad, dumb, movie that wastes actual likable people. I saw it at our local $2 and it was one of the few things I regretted going to, and I'd go see jank like Leap Year at that price.

I still say Penn had the better performance in Milk that year. I know his win was also a social statement, yes, but my god he was great in that.
