Regardless, I like the gimmick because it seems believable. If it's completely made up, then it's cool. If it has basis in reality, then it's even cooler.

Let me put it like this; I don't want to watch an Ox Baker match thinking in the back of my mind, "He's just a peach of a guy doing this to support his family."
Dude just looked terrifying. Let me lose myself in the moment and believe he's out to annihilate Dick the Bruiser.

I'm going with real, but exaggerated, solely because we don't have any other explanation for that nasty scar on his side/back.

well he was 19 when fight club came out and there were a few fight clubs sprang up at the time, flights to Europe for the weekend were cheapish at the time.
possible but unlikely.
this thread has done two things, made me realise I'm 4 days older than wade barrett, and left me wondering just how many posters here are from Lancashire/north west England?

It'd be funny if the scar happened in the least badass way possible.
"I was carrying in groceries for my mom and she made me some iced tea. I spilled a little on the floor, then slipped on it and fell onto the glass coffee table. I tried to catch myself but it ended up scraping me up pretty bad under my arm when the table shattered. It took almost an entire container of Spider Man bandaids to patch it up."

He was on Jericho's podcast recently and not only makes no mention of it, he talks about having a recruitment consulting job, meeting company execs face-top-face, before and while he was learning to wrestle. I would have to think holding a corporate job like that with an emphasis on face-to-face contact would be difficult for a guy getting punched in the face on a regular basis to hold down. Admittedly I was only sort of half listening to it as I was doing something else, but I'm sure that the bare knuckle thing came up and Jericho almost teasingly said "let's talk about your bare knuckle boxing days", Barrett talks about something completely different, then it's never mentioned again. I'm like 95% convinced it's all complete bullshit but then you really can't be too sure - which is what makes it a good work, if a bit pointless now as it's rarely alluded to on-screen anymore. Yup, happened just like that. Jericho said it in a very tongue in cheek tone and Wade just laughed. Came off as a guy messing with him about a goofy old gimmick, not bringing up his awesome past in a bloody English Fight Club.

It is likely he did get in a few scraps, had some bets on him as the local hard man and that's it. No official fight syndicate or anything.
I live in Preston, it's a dump, nothing better to do than fight or flirt with a prostitute on Church Street. It's like GTA.

It's as real as CM Punk's "background in jiu jitsu and muay thai" was when he came into ECW. So much for straight edge.

I would assume he got into a few scruffs coming up in age and WWE turned it up a notch times 10. I mean I wouldn't mess with the guy he looks like he can handle his own and that in itself makes the gimmick for him.

Most likely scenario is that he did it once and it just became something cool to put as a gimmick

It's completely legit. Brian Williams did a whole feature on it.

The thing that always me wonder was that he actually got to give a shoutout to the NHS and how much they helped him on the WWE website. I can't imagine that Vince would allow that just for a gimmick.

I could believe he was in one fight, which messed up his nose, and that's about it.
