What the hell was that about? Am I the only one that doesn't get it. They called Tyrus by his old name Brodus Clay and brought up some of his catchphrases. Referred to the Hardy's as former WWE tag champs. Even brought up Awesome Kong history as Kharma. Why bring up these people past when they are with you. I can understand the Hardys but for Kong and Tyrus i'm stuck.

Referencing WWE is "edgy".

Maybe nobody told Josh that TNA is supposed to be a nationally syndicated product instead of some random indy fed he's getting a quick payday from, IE he's not supposed to reference the "direct competition" as opposed to referencing a league indomitably above and beyond themselves.
Then again...

I don't mind it as long as the wrestler isn't trying a whole new character like EC3. Use it to your advantage to a degree. "The Hardys were king of tag teams in WWE and went on to great singles success but now they want to get to the top of TNA'S tag division. Can they take down the Wolves, the Revolution or whomever else we can throw together to get to the top" or mentioning that Kong used to be Kharma or Tyrus was Brodus in WWE on the off chance someone flipping stations finds them and is curious. Their characters aren't that different and won't be hurt by admitting their past, just don't sound bitter or make TNA seem a step down (production does a good enough job).
However, like I said I wouldn't do it for an EC3 or Bram who didn't have the exposure and are creating characters far different than they were in WWE.

I just think it's come off as cheap. For a small independent with a local TV deal I totally get it because it gives someone instant credibility but with TNA they already should have credibility based on the fact they're in TNA are on National TV and are "TV stars".
All the shots they take at WWE is silly as well. WWE is way ahead of you TNA. Don't throw stones when you're in a glass house.

Well they also mention ROH so I don't mind it. I grew up with WCW doing the same thing.

I don't mind it as far as championships go but like how WWE does with Owens, Neville, Zayn they are vague in saying they've traveled the world while only referencing their backgrounds in video promos when needed. Of course WWE and WCW did it all the time back in the day but we are talking damn near "ancient history" as far as WCW and WWE being in a war with each other.

He's been doing it ever since he showed up. It's weird, I'm so used to him as a WWE guy, it makes it sounds like I'm watching smackdown whenever he makes a wwe reference like talking about "WWE HOFer Edge" on Taz's podcast. Maybe they're trying to confuse the audience into thinking that they're watching a third brand. Or the people who still think Smackdown is on Friday.

Remember the old cartoons with the big dog and the little dog that's yapping around him before getting swatted away? That's what I'm always reminded of when TNA pulls something like this.
It also doesn't help any efforts to rebrand these guys as TNA stars if commentary's just going to remind people time and time again that they made their names elsewhere.

I hate when other companies are mentioned on tv broadcasts. I hate it when TNA do it, I hate it when ROH do it, I hated whenever Striker and JR did it at WrestleKingdom. WCW mentioning WWE and vice versa are the only ones I can stand because their invasions were actual storylines.
Walter and Skyler never had a conversation about what happened on The Walking Dead that week. If I'm watching your stories, don't tell me about someone elses,

Depends whether you look at it as a TV entertainment show or something that's presenting itself a sporting contest. As an entertainment show it makes little sense to reference your direct competitors, but from a sports perspective it makes more sense. For example if a Football player transfers to a different team, his history with the previous team isn't automatically forgotten or not mentioned, if anything it's used to build him up, especially if he came from a particularly successful spell with them. Same with pro-fighters, their history is part of the package that the promoter presents to the public, so from that point of view I have no issue with it. If I was personally running a wrestling company and I was lucky enough to sign a wrestler with some prestigious achievements I'd certainly be bigging them up on the air. It makes them seem like a bigger deal, it doesn't insult the viewers intelligence and it adds an air of legitimacy to the proceedings.

If a casual viewer is watching who watches WWE as well and thinks "isn't that X from WWE?" why not mention it? It makes no sense to act like said wrestler didn't exist anywhere else.

It makes them seem like a bigger deal, it doesn't insult the viewers intelligence and it adds an air of legitimacy to the proceedings. Beat me to it; it's to create the more "legit sports" feel, and I really don't mind it. I remember when Samoa Joe first showed up in TNA, while they were still online-only before they moved Impact to Spike, Tenay made a point of mentioning that Joe was ROH champion for nearly two years; later, when Austin Aries showed up, they said on PPV that Aries was the man who ended his reign there. If they were doing the same old passive-aggressive snark toward WWE on commentary, or stupid stunts like they used to pull, that would suck, but this is much more just straight up acknowledging the potential elephant in the room: that fans will recognize Angle, the Hardy's, Tyrus, Kong, or whomever else from WWE, so why ignore it? If they keep it to that and little funny digs like that recent video with Tyrus staring sadly at a disco ball, then it's really not a big deal. Go back to doing crap like having VKM, or Vince/Triple H impersonators showing up? Then we're back to "Ugh, not this shit again" levels.
