It's always looked white and gold to me. It also looks like it should be an old woman's table runner.

The dress is White and Gold, but looks blueish-gray and a dark shade of gold due to the light hitting it. There is NO black in it at all. I don't get why this is such a big deal. The actual colors are NOT a subjective thing, there is a completely objective answer. The only variable is how people perceive the color. The gold is #7f6e43. The blue-gray goes from around #8497b7 to #66687f depending on how the light hits it. Again, this isn't a subjective thing, colors of the dress in the image are these colors:

It has to do with afterimage and how our brains and eyes process colors. I have seen the same picture look white and gold and blue and black. I have also seen it enough where I can see it change in front of me.

According to my Photoshop color picker, it's light blue and dark brown. & that's what I see.

An answer that is in the actual image, not the afterimage. It's easy enough to take a dropper to the picture in any decent image program and get the actual colors in the image. Those are what I made into the standalone, which definitely doesn't look black to me. Does it to you? Seriously question.

You edited the answer off of my post when you quoted it... I said the colors in the image of the dress are blueish-gray and dark gold. The same ones in that image.

I don't get how anyone can see white. I'm seeing something that is clearly blue. As for the other color, I don't know what it is. It could be a very dark gold, but it definitely isn't black either, as I can see some kind of shade to it. I think some of them kind of mentally adjust and think "Must be white in bad lighting".

White and Gold, definitely. The thing is, I can see where people are getting blue from, but where in the hell does anybody see black?

i don't know how anyone can see something else other than blue and black What about in the tri-color image I posted? That's the actual colors in the image, using a color picker/eyedropper in GIMP and PhotoShop. I can't speak for the dress IRL since we can't really tell due to the way the light's hitting it, but the colors we see in the image are there.

We are automatically taking light into account. The actual color we see before we adjust it (consciously or subconsciously) is definitely a light blue/blue-gray though.

I can see how the shade appears to be either white or a light blue, for the life of me no matter how much I look away and look back at it I don't see any black. Just the ugly gold mustardy color.

If it is a lighting thing, it must be only because of the very specific angle the picture was taken, because there is a rack of something made out of black and white material right next to the dress(you have to look at the full picture to see it clearly, though), and that material is very clearly black and white(which, btw, is why I keep saying I see the dress as blue, because I have white objects to compare it to and it clearly stands out as a different color from the white surrounding it).

Those are the exact same colors as the image, just without all of the context. Do you still see black without all of the other little things that could play tricks on your eyes?

I guess there's a reason why this is the #1 trend worldwide on Twitter and has seemingly baffled Tumblr. I tried to look at it objectively and state for a fact that we "see" blue and gold in the image, but truth be told there's no way of knowing what color the dress actually is short of seeing it IRL. It's definitely not f***ing black though...
