For those unaware Rey Mysterio's WWE deal has recently expired and as of right now he is a free agent. I think TNA need to make a play for him for the following reasons:
Pros:
- He's been on some form of National Television for pretty much the last 20 years. There isn't one year from 1995 onwards where Rey hasn't appeared on TV in some form.
- He has a huge fan base with the casual fans and a lot of the hardcore fans respect and enjoy him.
- Huge star in Mexico. If TNA could get him on some kind of exclusive deal they could do massive business in Mexico with Mysterio leading the charge.
- Incredibly marketable. He still does his cool moves, has his mask and can use the name Rey Mysterio Jr in TNA no problems.
Cons:
- Admittedly he is injury prone but he claims he's 100% healthy
- Is beginning to age and slow down in the ring
- Hasn't been viewed as a main eventer for a number of years now
---
Ultimately I think he is a must sign for TNA if they can afford him. I'd throw every dollar I had at Mysterio to get him to sign for the next year or two and market the company around him, Jeff, Angle and EC3. With Mysterio you have a lot of dream matches on the TNA roster that could still take place and you have a guy who can appear on television and promote the TNA product. With the correct marketing this could be a boost to TNA's ratings. Not a significant boost but a boost.
Some dream matches:
Aries/Rey
Jeff Hardy/Rey
Kurt Angle/Rey (I know it happened before but those two could still have a decent match)
Low Ki/Rey
Must sign in my opinion. What do you guys think?

They already got 2 former WWE world champions on death wishes. No need for a third. Besides Rey is AAA bound with no stop in TNA.

If they actually had a creative team and a group of agents that I had any faith in, I'd have had no issue with this.
However, they don't and they'll book him into oblivion within a month and make him another geek on the roster before long.
Everything you said in your opening post is absolutely correct. However, I have zero faith in this company getting it right if they signed him.

The 2 WWE Champions they have are basically "just another guy" on their roster though. If they managed to get Rey and actually kept him as a star he could probably do good business for them. This IS TNA though. You just know that Rey's first night would be him beating Austin Aries in 2 minutes and immediately joining Beatdown Clan.

It happens to everyone no matter their spot in WWE.

I wish they could just follow this simple strategy: - Have big star debut on TV show to boost ratings - Have heel wrestler challenge new big star starting feud - Compelling feud and story line - Feud finishes on PPV where you have the wrestler work his debut match against an opponent he has beef with and you ultimately pop a buy rate. That's all. Easier said than done I know but it works for WWE and ROH...

He would be a great addition to the roster, no doubt. But so would CM Punk and Edge and you won't see those two within 500 metres of a TNA ring and rightfully so.
Rey has no need for them. It'd all be beneficial for TNA and this stage of his career he doesn't need them in the slightest. He can make do in AAA or Lucha Underground.

Yea if they couldn't keep Jeff as a star fresh off his main event run then I see them having a hard time with an ailing body Rey Mysterio. It could be a good get for them but as mentioned he's on his way to Lucha Underground or AAA

The past four years, Rey has worked about four matches. He's held up by willpower anymore as he's that injury prone. And he can't do any of the stuff he used to anymore with how his body has shutdown due to the 25+ years he's been wrestling. He can barely do the 619 anymore and no longer does the hurricarana instead its just a weak splash.
It'd be foolish to throw money at him and they've already got two guys on there who are about to keel over.
He's not going anywhere except maybe a special appearance for AAA shows.

That's all. Easier said than done I know but it works for WWE and ROH... Ratings boost is hard for a network in the boondocks of cable tv. Spike may not been elite but compare to Destination America, it's A&E. TNA has been trying the hail mary boost with name wrestlers since their existence with little success. Doubt Rey will lead them to the promise land when Hulk f***ing Hogan couldn't. TNA's main heels are part of stables and have little to no heel credibility. Which damages the face when he lose to said heel. TNA has problems dragging a feud out way past its expiration date. Roode already got his definite revenge victory against Young but the feud must continue because they got no program for him. Add in TNA ppvs barely exist and act as informercials for Impact instead on the end of the story. I rather TNA focus their limited resources in creating TNA branded stars than hoping folks see the former WWE names and mistaking it for WWE programming.

Rey needs to take as much time off as he needs so he won't immediately need to go back on the IR again once he wrestles, and basically reinvent himself like the Great Muta did when his knees were shot. Rey still doing the same schtick only on the indies on in TNA and still wrestling as a high flier who is unable to fly would be a sad final chapter to a great carer.

You know, if all this crap in the WWE was happening in 2010 when Hogan/Bischoff came in, TNA may have struck gold since Spike would have picked up the tab on a lot of the bigger names (although I'm sure Punk would have said no regardless unless he got Lesnar money/schedule). Nowadays, TNA is a death trap for talent.
