Always preferred the one arm drop as a rule because why would the ref do it three times? Surely if the person's arm drops like that you should stop it pretty much then and there for the safety of the competitor? I like the arm drop as a finish, just not the three arm drop variety. I know but pro wrestling is built on drama and doing it 3 times is alot more dramatic then once. You build the time to see that third time. Sure when nobody ever lost it lost the luster but I like 3 vs 1

Am I right in thinking WWE did this at one point with submissions? I am sure they at least did it during the mid 2000's hell I think it was used in the finishing stretch of Holly/HBK/HHH at WM20 before HHH ultimately tapped out. Why did they stop using it? I think it is a great hot finish and a great way to get the crowd (even more) invested into a finish holly/HBK/HHH? WHAT Long-standing board meme of replacing Benoit's pre-match graphic with the generic black silhouette which most people assert was Holly's.

The way I see it in Kayfabe, a properly applied sleeper isn't potentially injury occurring so the ref gives them until 3. But moves like the Masterlock and The Accolade are potential damaging moves that it's in the referees best interest to end the fight as soon as they can.

Was there any times of note where we assumed someone would come alive on 3, but the arm dropped anyway? Didn't Piper beat Hogan this way in WCW?

Sure when nobody ever lost it lost the luster but I like 3 vs 1 I do get that idea. But I've grown up in a generation where there is no drama behind the third arm drop because the chances of it ending the match are slim (i.e. in my almost eighteen years of watching pro wrestling I can't recall off the top of my head a single time the third arm drop ended a match). So there is no drama for me which is why the logic side of me wins out on this particular debate.

Was there any times of note where we assumed someone would come alive on 3, but the arm dropped anyway? Triple H vs Jeff Hardy. Triple H defeated Jeff with a sleeperhold in one of Hardy's last appearances before his 1st WWE departure.

Triple H defeated Jeff with a sleeperhold in one of Hardy's last appearances before his 1st WWE departure. Was that 2003, then? It would tie in with HHH's other awkward attempt to reintroduce the Indian Death Lock as part of his moveset. Say what you please about HHH's 2002-2004 run, but my lord, I commend the performer for trying to bring pro-wrestling back to basics.

Was there any times of note where we assumed someone would come alive on 3, but the arm dropped anyway? HHH tried so hard to get his MAIN EVENT SLEEPER over by making people lose to it by that method. Most notably Spike Dudley.

Money Inc. won the belts from the Natural Disasters this way. If I recall correctly, Quake's arm dropped three times after getting the Million Dollar Dream.

It's always been my understanding that in actuality the referee can stop the match at any time if he feels one of the competitors is unconscious and no longer able to defend himself. He just lifts the arm three times as a courtesy. But if he feels the wrestler is completely gone with one arm lift or even none at all, then he is completely within his rights to stop the match then and there.
