Seems really counter-productive to me. No matter how played out Cena is, he's still the top guy with no one really in a position to take his place due to WWE's stubbornness. Why hurt the one guy on your regular roster who is something resembling a draw? If you are gonna do this story, you HAVE to have someone waiting in the wings to take the old guy's spot. Roman ain't gonna cut it ATM.

My best guess? They have no idea what they are doing.

Roman looking like the cool, young alternatives to the more 'casual' fan?
I bet thats part of it. 'Well. If we just tell EVERYONE that Cena is old and lame now. His merch sales will just magically transfer over to the next guy!'

Filling TV time because they're more focused on slightly saving Roman?

So that he can overcome being old when he beats Rusev at Mania.

It'll be dropped as soon as the Rusev feud is over.

They're gonna recast him as Kid Cena for a year, with a 12 year old running wild over the division in an angle that everyone hates. THen there will be an accident and classic Cena will return.

They gotta make Cena look weak to make Roman look strong.

Roman ain't gonna cut it ATM. Because Cena isn't the top guy. He's just the head of the day to day guys. I've said I believe the top guy is still Triple H. He's the pinnacle point for mania ever since Shawn retired. If Rock hadn't wanted a nostalgia run and didn't hand pick Cena, I don't think Cena gets any really epic worthy Manias. Mania is now a constant re-loop of nostalgia acts and Triple H build. The rest of the year is for Cena and the other guys.

I'm assuming after Cena main evented Wrestlemania 3 years in a row, with 2 matches against The Rock which were built over those 3 years, Vince felt he should take a step back, that's why he's been working with Wyatt and now Rusev.
I would think next year Cena might get a more high profile match against maybe Reigns. It looks as if WWE wants to move on from Cena but keeps going the wrong way about it.

It leads to Cena taking some time off and moving to the Himalayas to live as a Tibetan Monk, where he reflects on his failures and how he has disappointed the youth of America. We get a new video from him each week where he's quietly sitting at his desk and writing in his journal, with a dramatic voice over of him reading his Jack Handey-ish "Deep Thoughts" out loud.
He returns in 6 months as Wise Old Man Cena with a gray ponytail and fu manchu moustache, dressed as Raiden from Mortal Kombat, and dispensing his knowledge to all who seek it, much like his Total Divas persona.
Or, more likely, WWE has no clue what they're doing so they're just throwing crap against the wall to see what sticks.

It's to shoehorn a "gee guys, I don't think I can do this anymore" underdog angle before he beats Rusev clean at WM.

Emperor Rusev screws up his wish, de-aging Cena to 12. Later on, it turns out that Paul Heyman's long-forgotten Creation, Rhyno, has returned to destroy Cena, but it's really revenge for something we've never heard about until now. After that, because people have been wishing too much, the Evil 7 NXT Wishing-whatevers (played by the "NXT 5" plus Breeze and Corbin) show up and threaten to shut the entire company down within a year. NOT because they're not socially-conscious enough, but just because that's what they exist to do.

Like Austin Hart build to Survivor Series Redoing the Bret/Austin angle would be amazing! Just imagine at WM, Cena holding a bloody Ambrose in the STF who passes out and never taps out. And Cena trying to hurt him some more after the match until guest referee UFC fighter, Walking Dead enthusiast and comic book writer Phil Brooks steps in!

Like Austin Hart build to Survivor Series I'd be down for it. Cena leaves, Ambrose goes heel and becomes WWE Champion. Ambrose defends the title against everyone before talking shit about a "retired" Cena. Cena returns and faces Ambrose and wins his 16th title. Afterwards, through nefarious methods Ambrose wins the title back and they have a blow off match which Ambrose wins barely but it cements Cena as "the benchmark" again as he enters his next feud and wins. It would be great.

How exactly does any of this hurt Cena?
Do the little children now hate him because he was referred to as old a few times?
