Didn't they reference too it in the Sunmerslam match, possibly when he had Hogan in the camel clutch? Unless I'm wrong. Slaughter was an Iraqi sympathiser so they may as well made the Iranian Sheik one too. With his connections to both Hogan and Slaughter it made sense

I just figured it was because Vince didn't know the differences between Iranians and Iraqis, and didn't care.

I don't think Vince really gave a lot of careful thought to the nationalities of Sheik or Mustafa. I mean, years before he had Sheik walk out and salute while Volkoff sang the Soviet national anthem. Bottom line is they were both foreign guys, and in the 80's and 90's there were only two nationalities... Americans and Foreigners. The crowd didn't care either.

I never understood how we were supposed to think that Slaughter, Mustafa, and Adnan had a chance against Hulk and Warrior. The three bad guys were pretty old looking, and out of shape compared to the good guys. It would be like booking Hacksaw Duggan, Greg Valetine and Jimmy Hart against Reigns and Cena

Also Hawaiians who were foreigners for some reason.

This was a pretty common occurrence really, all over the place in wrestling during the territory years. Especially when managers like Fuji, Akbar and Adnan (in AWA) were involved. Evil Russian commies teaming with Evil Japanese ninjas teaming with Chinese barbarians teaming with Cuban mercenaries teaming with African tribal warriors teaming with German Nazis teaming with whatever the hell Teijo Khan was supposed to be.

I think WWF magazine used to opening acknowledge on occassion that Mustafa was ex-champion Iron Sheik. But then they also wrote pieces about how the Dragon was an ex-IC champion and how Tony Atlas had "embraced his roots" to become Saba Simba. So, not exactly in tandem with TV presentation.

Exactly. Before the internet made the rest of the world so much more accessible to the average joe, most of us weren't very nuanced in our understanding of international politics. For international news, we had network TV News (cable news wasn't a tenth as popular as it is now) and the local newspaper. You weren't in any way interacting with people from other countries. Heck, I might just be a cynic, but I figure 50-75% of wrestling fans these days still wouldn't know or care that an Iraqi sympathizer from Iran is pretty unrealistic.
