I don't think that's that bizarre though. If you go from WrestleMania 14 to WrestleMania 18 with the criteria of Stone Cold, The Rock, or Triple H then you only get 2 matches in that time span.

If you count the World Title during the periods when it was more important, you get a few more unique matchups there.

this doesn't seem that bad considering the brand split, and cm punks extra long run.

From what I can find, the last time Triple H was in a WWE title match not involving Cena and/or Orton was No Way Out 2009, so this would be the third match since then not featuring Cena, Orton or Punk.

Right but it's also with one less person and no brand split. If you count the World Title during the periods when it was more important, you get a few more unique matchups there. The World Title was only more important than the WWE Title in 2004 and the first half of 2005 (and almost every single World Title match during this period involved Triple H). The belts were on equal footing before then, and after that point (coinciding almost directly with Cena being drafted to Raw) the WWE Title was clearly presented as the more important of the two titles.

Including Punk in there with the other guys kind of skews the data here. It's not like Punk was hogging main events, even when he was champion.

Punk wasn't always in the main event, but he defended the belt pretty frequently. I'm pretty sure "main event" doesn't matter in this statistic.

Why is Punk even part of this "data?" He didn't even enter the WWE Title picture until 2011, and the only reason he "stayed in it" for a year was because he was champion for a year. Hell, I'm not Hunner's biggest fan, but he didn't enter the WWE Title picture until a year later (2006) and left it three years later, as Sparvid noted.

Another fun fact: there have been no nude champions, save for the trunks shortage of 1971. People admired Pedro Moralez balls to perform like that.

That and due to lack of manscaping at the time, half the wrestlers looked like Giant Gonzalez's body suit limiting the need for editing for TV. Although....maybe they were admiring Pedro Morales' balls in a literal sense

Hell, I'm not Hunner's biggest fan, but he didn't enter the WWE Title picture until a year later (2006) and left it three years later, as Sparvid noted. Punk had a lot of PPV title defenses against guys other than Cena, Orton, and HHH. About 12 or so during his long reign. So if you take him out of the equation, there's about 17 WWE Championship PPV matches that didn't include just Cena, Orton, or HHH. Not as notable a stat.

Top stars in title matches? Hmm, why would that be?
