Common logic dictates that an upcoming talent defeating a big established star should put them over. However sometimes there's little benefit to the wrestler who gets that honour as the fans basically reject that it's a credible turn of events, presumably because the upcoming talent has yet to be accepted on that level.
Let's list some examples here.
Kozlov beating The Undertaker cleanly is perhaps the most obvious example as it's such a rare achievement that it should in theory put anybody over as a threat for years to come. Unfortunately for Kozlov it didn't really help him and he soon went down the comedy tag-partner route on the way to being future endeavoured.
Tensai beating both CM Punk and Cena is another, fans just weren't going to accept that gimmick.

Sheamus beating Cena in that table match, although it might have worked if the finish hadn't looked so contrived.

I've seen very few cases since late 90's of the "rub" actually working.
Generally fans don't really care if Cena "puts a guy over" in a match. It might have mattered back when there was one hour of wrestling a week and 4 PPVs, but now? No way.

It might have mattered back when there was one hour of wrestling a week and 4 PPVs, but now? No way. There really isn't a rub to give anymore. People want who they want, and are prepared to shit on anything that gets in the way of that. They see "the rub" as a method of a promotion forcing someone down their throat. "Like this guy because he beat that guy! Like this guy because that guy likes and approves of him!" If ANYTHING, the reaction is "Damn it, That Guy, don't lower yourself by working with This Guy!" "The Rub" just comes off as manipulation now, and many fans just aren't going to go along with the idea of being manipulated.

Jack Swagger pretty much running through Edge and Jericho on the way to winning the World Title and even fighting them off as well as Orton and Show. Everyone sees him as such a footnote of a World Heavyweight Champion, but other than maybe Cena they fed their most established talents to him, and it just didn't stick. They put some honest effort into trying to get him over. Sheamus beating Cena in that table match, although it might have worked if the finish hadn't looked so contrived. It still stuns me how many people think that was an accident or wasn't the booked finish. There was a brief suspension of belief, but it became obvious within a few seconds that that really was the finish. I work with someone who to this day believes that was never the intended finish, and will ask people he knows are into wrestling if they "remember when they put the title on Sheamus on accident", to which people who forgot the match then wonder what's up, and people who know the match in question just go "...no, moron...". And I know he's not the only one, there's theories and YouTube comments all the time about it. It's nuts.

I don't think it's anything to do with the big star. Fans already have their choices of who should be put over, and if it's not the guy they want, they won't accept it, regardless whether they beat Taker clean or a bunch of jobbers like Ryback when he was getting the Goldberg chants

The problem is that fans no longer have any faith in the wrestlers, or more specifically the way they are booked. Even when they do get a big win, chances are something will happen weeks later to negate most of if not all the good it might have done. And the WWE has nobody but themselves to blame for this by screwing up attempted push after push. At this point the number of failed pushes throughout even the past ten years alone would be enough to fill up an entire roster's worth of talent.
Until they undo the damage they've done for so long then I honestly believe that the WWE will never create another true star for a long time. Because honestly nobody can get over in today's environment. Because they're hampered by the cancer that is WWE Creative, which has killed more potential stars then anything else.

You don't get put over by beating someone anymore. You get over based on whether the fans like you or not and that's really about it. It seems to be relatively independent of your win/loss ratio or who you even beat.
It'll make fans happy to see you win if they liked you already. For the most part, hey aren't going to start liking you because you won though, those days are over. An exception can be made for kids.

I agree with your statement for the most part in case of most fans liking/hating who they want regardless of what the angles/storyline tell you , but I still line WWE could SOMETIMES guide the fans into liking who they want them to like . Ex. Ryback when they were doing the whole Undefeated streak and portraying him as some big monster aside from the occasional smarky "Goldberg" chants he was getting pretty over with the crowds.

The Cena vs. Angle trio of matches when Cena was WWE Champion. Angle did the honors & did them well but the crowd shat all over it.

Putting someone over in a match, if the person getting put over is up to it, I always like.
Lip-service type putting someone over though, like Cena tends to do in his feuds? I have no use for that.
