See, tag partners wearing the same outfit just reminds me of the posed photos of Jason Bateman and Jennifer Gardner in Juno, it just looks creepy.
You're not Britney and Justin, you're here to fight.

Side note: wouldn't it have been fun for Big Show and Rey Misterio to team up, with Show wearing an identical mask? Just to see if someone gets confused as to which is which? They could do the old Killer Bees switch-a-roo, and noone would be able to tell!

Same colour scheme with gear matching as close as possible, once broke up, they both have to ditch it. Jannetty kept on as the Rocker after and Anvil kept on with wearing Bret's gear until he raided MC Hammer's donation box. However, Bret did wear the team's gear, with slight modifications, the rest of his career, so it's not a total rule.

Back when having matching/co-ordinating gear was almost essential (during the mid- to late-1980s), a tag team without such gear was seen as either low-rent or temporary. This perception changed during the 90s as tag teams were increasingly part of factions and their gear generally reflected their loyalty to the faction, but also reflected a certain individuality which was required by the booking of the day - at any given time, loyalties could change and the gear had to be open to that change. Black has always been popular because of its flexibility, and persists as the colour of choice.

I like when they wear the same color scheme and sweet warm up jackets like the Real Americans or sweet ring jackets like the Brainbusters. They're a team after all they should look like one. Jackets are a nice look. I think it depends on the team, and I also think some variety is fine, but generally speaking, similar gear or color scheme, or both, is appreciated. That said, there's a lot of leeway with that sometimes. Like, Kane and Mankind, it wasn't hard to see the connection, even if their gear and color schemes were different. Two masks, guys playing unhinged characters, it worked, even if the team wasn't a long term one.

I like same scheme, but slightly different design. The Canadian Ninjas around 2010/2011 were my favourite - almost the same gear, but Nicole Matthews wore full tights, and Portia Perez wore 3/4 length to give them their own little differentiation.

I like them to at least look like they should be teaming together.
They don't have to look like the Road Warriors, or Demolition, but take the Midnight Express for example, for me Bobby and Stan looked more like a team than Bobby and Dennis-and they just wore similar tights.
It sucks that Vince seemingly hates tag teams, or at the very least looks at them as a stepping stone for one or both to move on to bigger things-then he slaps a couple of people together like Kane and RVD, and I lose interest.

I don't feel there's ever one hard, set rule, but if guys are going to wear different gear, then there should be a reason why it's ok. Everybody loved back in 2005 when Jack Evans and Roderick Strong were a team representing Generation Next in ROH; neither guy looked the same, and they had totally different gear, but you knew they worked well as a unit and had a reason to be tagging together (same faction), so it didn't matter.
In most situations, any team that looks to stick together for longer than, say, a couple of months should at least have a matching color scheme or logo or something, but there are always exceptions.
Regarding looks: personally, I tend to be partial to teams that have a big powerhouse bruiser and a smaller, dynamic striker/high flying guy paired together, just because they allow for more variety, but again, there's always exceptions (Steiners, Road Warriors, etc.).
