Not a topic I can recall ever hearing spoken off. We all know the story by now; Backlund lost the title to Iron Sheik, but instead of getting a rematch Hogan won the belt and launched the modern age of wrestling. Hogan has claimed Backlund was very bitter about it and he subsequently vanished from wrestling for a decade before re-emerging and becoming the ever memorable Mr Backlund. But what if he had turned around and gone to one of Vince McMahon's rivals like the AWA or NWA, or even eventually WCW? While I doubt it would have resulted in any major change in fortunes of any of those entities, the possibly match ups it could have lead to certainly are interesting to consider. Backlund vs Flair? Backlund vs Bockwinkel? Backlund vs Steamboat?

Imagine a WCW Bob Backlund in 90s WCW. I see him teaming with a lower card Renegade or some lame WCW crap.

Classic Flair ripping nerdy Backlund via promo would have been a thing of beauty.

He'd be Horseman instead of Paul Roma maybe?

He'd have been used to put over Flair in the NWA and/or Martel/Bockwinkel/Hennig in AWA (depending on his timing) and it would be subtly hit on that Hogan never pinned Backlund.

He'd be Horseman instead of Paul Roma maybe? So long as he didn't go into "Crazy Bob" mode and let Flair and Arn do the talking, I see this as an excellent idea. I think the correct answer for the Horsemen in 1993 with this idea in mind is Flair, Arn, Zbyszko, and Backlund. Four older technical beasts that just stretch the shit out of people all day long. If the Horsemen are faces in 93, have Flair go after Rude, The Enforcers vs. The Hollywood Blondes, and Backlund attempts to tackle the mountain that is Vader.

he could've had some great matches with flair in the 80s. or maybe some goody too shoes tag team thing with dusty, where he can do all the wrestling and dusty can just do the promos. imagine war games built as is, but with backlund as yet another incredible technician who knows how to handle a blood bath instead of paul ellering.

Backlund in NWA/WCW is somebody I could have seen be a great Television champ. I don't know why, but I equate good wrestling with holding that belt

He could have been the Bizarro Shawn Michaels- a straight-laced, no-nonsense wrestler with Vinnie Vegas as his bodyguard in 1991.
...we could have had Kevin Nash truly Bob Backlund Authorized 15 years earlier- think what his career would have been like then!

He'd be Horseman instead of Paul Roma maybe? Bob looked too nerdy to ever conceivably be a Horseman. Good wrestler but he always had an aura of goofiness about him that would preclude him from becoming a member IMO.

I believe he wrestled briefly for the Pro Wrestling USA program that featured NWA and AWA stars in 86 maybe IIRC, he had a pretty good match with Rick Martel where the AWA Title was on the line.

On the surface his amateur credentials would have made him a fit for the Varsity Club, but they seemed more jock-ish or frat-ish, so I am not sure it would've worked. I think he would have been a good fit for the York Foundation.
