If I remember correctly, the deal with Rusev and Cesaro were that Vince didn't think their first names sounded tough enough, so he said to drop them. I don't remember where I heard that or if that was just idle speculation around here. Antonio isn't Swiss enough. AHH NOW HE'S TOO SWISS. WHY CAN'T HE GET HIS SWISS JUST RIGHT! SHAVE THOSE SIDEBURNS!

I am going to make a totally reasonable and completely appropriate comparison: WWE is to branding what the Nazis were to eugenics. They take a concept that has good ideas in principle (whether that being creating of marketing speak that supports the brand and makes it easier to remember or trying to be proactive in eliminating harmful genes from the human genome) and twisting it away from it's original intention, following it much too literally and turning it into a destructive force that harms everything. Obviously the WWE's offenses pale in comparison but you catch my drift. No we don't! Under no circumstances should anyone be compared to Nazis!!!!! I'm not comparing them to the Nazis. I'm comparing their extreme application of a principle to the most universally recognized example of a group extremely applying a principle in order to try and illustrate a difficult point (and clearly doing so in a tongue In cheek manner) In no way are they like or even 0.0001% as bad as the Nazis obviously.

I also realized I used the term eugenics instead of genetics which makes what I said horrible. So I'm sorry about that. The real point is WWE has gone nuts with extreme branding principles like have no diva or European with a last name, fans are a Universe, wrestling is a nonsense term like Sports Entertainment, everyone must always do standard stuff in the ring like point to the Wrestlemania sign and do big moves facing the hard camera etc. Its goofy, weird and one of the most prominent examples of corporate marketing gone wild and it's driving me insane (clearly).

I've never understood it. I don't see how "NEVILLE" could possibly be marketable.

It's getting real bad now. Neville? Just Neville? Technically it's "The Man That Gravity Forgot" Neville. But still...

If Neville is going to defy gravity, at least paint him green and let him sing.

I actually don't mind this. A lot of times people ending up shortening the names anyway. Cena, Orton, Punk, Bryan, Ambrose, Rollins, Lesnar. I can barely remember Antonio Cesaro and Alexander Rusev now so I'm sure I'll get used to just Neville.

Maybe they thought it works with the Divas, so why not the guys? Neville is smart, sexy, and powerful.

With Rusev I think it's kind of the right call, but with Cesaro, Neville, and Big E... Yeah, I just don't get it. At least Cesaro and Big E can kind of stand on their own, Neville as a standalone name just sounds dumb.
Blake and Murphy had terrible names to begin with but losing the first names kind of made them worse.

It's the 4-syllable rule. If you look back at the history of wrestling, not a lot of stars have more than 4 syllables in their name. Adam Rose, Bo Dallas, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan, Bray Wyatt, and the entire Shield, got to keep their names. Rusev, Cesaro, and Neville didn't. There's a few exceptions, but that's generally the idea behind it. A lot of Hollywood celebrities who change their name also go with something shorter than 5 syllables, or they go by their shorter middle name if their last name is too long.

Bo Dallas Bray Wyatt Seth Rollins Roman Reigns Dean Ambrose Adam Rose Xavier Woods
In other words, it's a case by case basis. Don't simply ignore non-examples.

I'd say five should be limit, because one of the biggest stars ever is Stone Cold Steve Au-stin, and it was a hell of a catchy name.
