It's only fault was being a parody with the word "Movie" in the title. It caused it to be compared to the Scary Movie franchise and later those Seltzer/Friedberg "Movie" parodies. Not Another Teen Movie is brilliant and doesn't deserve to be dragged down to Seltzer/Friedberg's level by association. I consider it far closer to an homage than what you'd expect from a goofy parody. Unlike the others I've mentioned NATM comes across as corny, but respectful rather than moronic and malicious. Basically it's a tribute to John Hughes movies in the same way Shaun of the Dead was a tribute to George Romero movies. I may be wrong, but this and the first Scary Movie were the first two "Movie" movies, at least in the modern era tif I recall correctly. The reason all those other movies were such turds is because they were just wannabes trying to get in on a successful formula of two films that were actually funny. NATM was after Scary 2. It still has it's cult status due to word of mouth, but as I said it's legacy is a bit tarnished by the movies which came later. No matter how good the movie is I'm sure there's people who have passed it over due to miss-associating it with the similarly titled drek. In fact I know there has been. Even in recommending it to others personally I've had this happen. People hear "Movie" in the title and they say "uugh" almost by reflex.
