We could not defend titles on RAW I guess.

This definitely beats Ambrose's title reign where they'd forget for several months at a time to make him defend it in any way. Honestly though, it'd probably be better if they'd just had Rusev move past Cena onto his next feud and let him get the win over Cena when he's eventually without the belt. Rusev could simply decide he doesn't need a belt to crush people.

That would defeat the purpose of them having a match on a ppv. From a kayfabe perspective, Rusev just wants his title back, why would he care that it's on PPV? Maybe in kayfabe Rusev would get paid more for winning a title match on a PPV than a random Raw.

For those of you who complained about Cena main events and Cena's world title reigns, this should be your salvation.
I mean, hell, he made the US title something meaningful back in the day.
Seriously, how many really meaningful US champs have we had? For a long time, it had me wondering why the hell they dropped the old European championship?

Here's Cena putting up that title at least 4 times before the next PPV, just beat him here on RAW. I think it ties in to the whole pointlessness of this open challenge. He wants to fight under his terms and not Cena's terms.Get the advantage and all.

As other posters have said, it would be hilarious to see Cena lose the title a week before the PPV, getting his rematch clause at the PPV, with Rusev steaming for being left out. Would be fresh, interesting and logical, which is why it can never happen.

I just assume it's so Cena can kill off the midcard and make everyone who isn't him look like shit.
I still don't know why Russev didn't just lay down and let Cena pin him at Mania. His entrance was an American bukkake. Why even bother with the stimulation?

This is what a lot of people forget about the whole fighting champion concept. For the fighting champion (in this case John Cena) to remain a fighting champion and give the idea any semblance of longevity... he has to win these matches. Otherwise, it's just midcard hot potato bullshit again, and God knows we've been complaining about that enough over the years. So the best we can hope for is that Cena has competitive matches with these guys until he eventually loses the belt to someone, and as far as I can tell, that's what been happening. The problem with THAT is, some of the fanbase has become so burnt out and cynical because of year after year of these guys having great matches but not getting anywhere because of it, and that's created this "win at all costs" atmosphere where the only way to know who the people that WWE are behind actually ARE, are the ones who constantly win. Like, who cares that Stardust or Barrett just had a great match with the face of the company? They lost, and they'll probably lose next week too, to some other guy. Circle of life, right? Honestly, what's the solution here to appease these people? Cena's just not gonna get fired or quit or start jobbing out, because that's just ridiculous. Maybe not announcing Cena's PPV matches a month in advance would be a start. The solution is to not have him in clearly booked title defenses on PPV well in advance so that the open challenge matches have some semblance of tension in them.

The stupid thing is why doesn't Rusev just answer the open challenge? My headcanon is that in kayfabe he's the only one that can't answer the challenge - also that Rusev, being a heel, is too proud about wanting not just to beat Cena, but DESTROY him and everything he stands for in an I Quit match instead.

well one thing about these matches is that they have been more compeititive than the usual cena match against these guys. ambrose got to kick out of an AA- stardust actually got to hit his finisher on cena which never happens in the usual cena/midcarder match. yeah in the end it's cena taking their best shot and coming out on top but at least the matches aren't squashes (excepting the 115th attempt of heath slater to answer the challenge when he actually makes it all the way to the ring and the match starts)

I just think the formulas in the match suck. Constant finisher kickouts, zero transition or psychology...it annoys me.

One day someone will beat him.
And it should be a big moment.
Hopefully Neville a few months down the line.

I'd assume right now the better reason in headcanon is: Rusev doesn't realize that he can answer these open challenges himself. Lana is his manager, so he assumes he has to get any matches booked through Lana- and thus, if there was an open challenge, it'd be Lana who ends up challenging Cena for the title, not him. So, he has to have Lana directly book his challenges instead of taking an open challenge. (This also ties into why Rusev's now possessive of Lana- he doesn't want her to become brainwashed by the Americans and lose his manager, in the process losing the only one who presumably keeps him in the WWE.)

I think most of the matches have been pretty damn good. I like it, so of course that means they stop doing it this week. Yeah I'm going to Raw on the 11th and he's advertised in a tag team main event. The open challenge might be done already.

Cena realised there were some finishing moves on the roster that he hadn't kicked out of yet, so he set up this challenge in order to finish the job.

I see nothing wrong with it. It's one of the best things they've done with the U.S. Championship in years.

I just think the formulas in the match suck. Constant finisher kickouts, zero transition or psychology...it annoys me. I hate the match structure for a similar reason. Most of them have s been those stupid ass matches where Cena kicks out of a million and one moves before winning with an AA. Just not fun to watch to me.
