...particularly, the go-to line that people use when they defend him. Which makes me think...what was his last TV appearance? And how did he come across then?

I thought it was Mr. Kennedy, but a quick Google search reveals it was Elijah Burke as well as the video.

Yes....well did he seem disoriented, etc?

I thought it was Mr. Kennedy, but a quick Google search reveals it was Elijah Burke as well as the video. Kennedy was Eddie Guerrero's last opponent. Eddie did his fake dq shenanigans to win a match, and Kennedy blasted him with a chair afterwards because he was pissed off at losing due to the fakeout DQ.

Believe it was a tag team match with him and, I want to say Punk vs Monty Brown (or whatever his stupid WWE name was) and Elijah Burke... and the match sucked and Benoit was visibly pissed after. I believe this was Benoit's first and only appearance on the ECW brand TV show (not counting the ONS events or the original real ECW of course.)

Yeah I think it was that, I think this was the start of the "refs treat it like a real sport." and Cor Von wouldn't leave the ring so the ref DQ'ed him. That's why Benoit was pissed.

His last match was against Elijah Burke the week after the tag match.
I don't remember the match. I believe it was the setup for the Vengeance title match against Punk.

I totally forgot the Burke match, but now that I look back on the Youtubes, that is indeed correct.
I also completely forgot that Benoit had started using the Sharpshooter as his go-to finisher instead of the Crossface.
Watching the last Burke match, Benoit seemed his normal self, but I of course cringed during some of his signature spots like bumping off the apron onto the mat, and the diving headbutt.

I remember the show closing with Punk winning and Benoit coming out and they sort of exchanged their respects for each other.

I remember shortly after Umaga passed a interviewer asked if it was a honor being both Eddie Guerrero's and Umaga's last opponent and he just gave the interview the "ARE YOU f***ING KIDDING ME YOU f***ING DUMB f***ING IDIOT" look and just said well if I was their hand picked retirement opponent then of course.

I remember the match with Elijah Burke, but what got me was how Benoit was behaving afterwards. If you see it (it might still be on YouTube) he looks distracted, but seems to be digging his thumb into his chest (damned close to his heart) as he looks at the ECW title belt on the table.
With what we know now about his enlarged heart, I wonder if it was becoming a concern and that the visit to Dr. Phil Astin that Friday might have been related to that. If he knew or strongly suspected that he was going to be told that he couldn't be cleared to wrestle sometime soon, would that have been yet another possible factor?

The Burke match contained an insane spot where Benoit went for the Diving Headbutt, and Burke countered with getting his knees up into Benoit's head.
Yikes.

There was a tournament for the vacant ECW I title. His last match was a semi final against Elijah Burke. I remember watching the match and thinking that it was nice that they were planning to build ECW around him and was looking forward to seeing him carry the brand. How wrong I was !

He was clearly pissed because he got demoted to ECW. [/nancygrace]
