I've always thought he was a decent announcer and yet for some reason I don't recall ever even reading about WWE ever making an approach. Was it a case of when he was not working elsewhere, Vince already had established play by play men in place? Is there any heat with him and the company or is it just a simple case of the stars never aligned?

He was too in touch with the dirtsheets at a time when that was the last possible thing Vince needed.
Also, he's honestly not that good of an announcer. Knowledgable mind, valuable to have in some asset due to said knowledge, but just not a good announcer.
[controversial statement]I think I'd personally put him up there with Gordon Solie as the most overrated announcers ever.[/controversial statement]

I know he won the "Best Announcer" WON award a handful of times but I don't put too much stock in that as they gave Worst Announcer to Gorilla Monsoon several times.

He's just not what Vince wants in an announcer, he's a bald, middle aged man who knows a great deal about wrestling whose strength lies in giving the background of stars and moves which has never been a major part of the WWF/E's commentary style. Vince wants parrots and shills and that became painfully obvious in the period that Tenay was available between the end of WCW and TNA becoming a full time thing with Panda's backing, Lawler and Ross lost it and he put Tazz and Cole together on Smackdown.

When he was finally freed to work for the WWE, The WWE changed from having older looking guys as announcers to younger looking guys.

Because he has all of the personality of an old school Bob Backlund wrestling buddy.

All of that doesn't make him a decent commentator either... Because he isn't. He was decent as the third man professor but he was terrible in the lead play by play role and I can't imagine him adding much to the main color position. Also JR did the same thing with background of stars all the time in the Attitude era.

He is the only well known announcer that calls the match as legit sport. Unfortunately for him that's a good thing and a bad thing at the same time.
All the lead announcers like JR, Gorilla, Vince or Tony were all the same thing over and over again so Tenay is no better or worse than any of them. But I would rather listen to him than Lawler, Taz, JBL or Cole. Don't even want to mention Booker or Vince.

I'm not saying he's a good commentator but lets be honest, being a good commentator doesn't really matter when it comes to getting a spot on the WWF/E's team. All that matters is being fairly telegenic and good at repeating the lines that are screamed at you via a headset, Tenay is neither. As for JR giving the background of wrestlers, he did so for two or three years and was a shill for the rest of his run. The norm for WWE commentary is pretending that the rest of wrestling doesn't exist if Vince doesn't own it, heck, sometimes they even pretend that people in the ring don't exist so there's no place for a guy like Tenay in the booth.

Because what he's best at isn't what WWE wants in an announcer, namely 1. calling something like a real sporting event 2. calling the actual moves being used 3. knowing the background of luchadores and Japanese guys.

I just want him to do that "alien invasion" angle at some point before he retires.

Seem like he would be better as a stats and resource kind of guy than anything for WWE. If he were to work there now it would be for NXT and HHH probably have him teach some newer guys the more minor details of announcing. In saying that though, you could always get JR to do that.
