I'm actually somewhat pleasantly surprised that they bothered to do that, since I'm certain many of us thought they had him represent Russia just because of "LOL NOBODY KNOWS WHERE BULGARIA IS" and because Putin, and that they'd have him continue to be Russian in the wake of this breakup with Lana. But now they've had him go back to representing his native country, it actually becomes interesting character development that dated all the way back to NXT.
Remember, Lana appeared in NXT and took this dirty-looking guy who was breaking boards in a loincloth, cleaned him up and took him all the way to the fringes of the main event of the main roster, cultivating a year-long winning streak in the process. Surely Rusev would have shown appreciation for all that, so he did so very early in the piece by defecting to Russia. Now that it's all gone to hell, he's gone back home. Presumably Lana's kept the Hero Of The Russian Federation medal in the breakup, as well as the Putin commemorative plates.

I think it's rather ungrateful considering everything Russia did for him

He was the most non Russian looking "Russian" I've ever seen. Nikolai Volkoff looked more Russian and he was Ukrainian/Croatian. Same with Zhukov and Koloff. Rusev would've made a good Turk.

Time to introduce a new flavor to make us forget Lana.

I liked to imagine Putin watched Raw with a single tear running down his cheek when he saw that

After the break... no explanation.

It's only a matter of time before Zeb returns suffering from amnesia with an "Uncle Bulgaria" gimmick.
Jack Swagger then sets out to remind Zeb that he's a real American that's more Uncle Sam than Uncle Bulgaria.
(Yes amnesia from a bad leg, it's wrestling, go with it)

Russia gave him a Tank to drive to the ring at Wrestlemania and what appeared to be some sort of honor guard. He should show some respect. What has Bulgaria ever given him?

Rusev is still angry that one of the honor guards was really out of step. It made him realize that Russia isn't all it's cracked up to be

(Yes amnesia from a bad leg, it's wrestling, go with it) Let's be honest, that would be far from the most outlandish thing to have happened.
