Yeah, Vince pays for rehab, because if Kurt Angle continues down the road he's on and drops dead in the ring, you won't see him described as a TNA wrestler. Anyone who's ever worked for Vince will be described as 'ex WWE wrestler dies from drug overdose' even if he last worked there 20 years ago.
As to the Harts... They're all a big bunch of marks for themselves and 'the Hart Legacy' from what I can tell. The only one who wasn't like that was Owen.

I think Vince has paid for rehab for people for quite a long time. Stories have been going around about him doing it on the quiet for ten years or more. And I really don't think it's just down to a cynical PR move, because at the end of the day, people who don't work for Vince can do what they like, and if they take drugs, it's on them. That's how the WWE could spin it, if they really wanted. And it's not like those two-bit gossip websites would do their research, or even care, about whether a guy went to rehab and who paid for it anyway.
As evidenced with Bret, Vince does have a heart, and can be surprisingly sentimental and caring. He didn't have to call Bret in hospital, they hadn't spoken for years and had been bitter enemies on opposite sides of a nasty lawsuit. Vince was even producing a documentary designed to denigrate Bret's name, he was that pissed at him. But Bret suffered a stroke, and Vince put all that aside and called his old friend to wish him well. And it meant a massive amount to Bret, paving the way for the reconciliation we've seen between Bret and the WWE.

The Canadian raw that Bruce took an ailing Stu to had the main event finish of (heel) Austin beating Benoit with the sharpshooter in a screwjob finish in front of where Stu was sitting. I think that was designed to rub salt in Brets wounds further. Doubt it. Vince was trying to amend fences with Bret Hart months after the screwjob incident. Plus I doubt Austin who was the wrestler with the most say at the tie and possibly Benoit wouldn't have gone through with it if he figured this was used to insult to Bret. I doubt Stu Hart or the Hart Family would of went throught with it as well. Say whaaaaaa? Bret was buried on air, received phonecalls from Vince threatening to sue him for everything he was worth, keeping Owen under contract against his wishes... Vince apologised to Bret for the screw job after Owen's death, promised him the photos from his career to use in his book and begged him to finish his career in the WWF. In the weeks following that, Bret contacted WWF to use the photos and Vince said he had no recollection of saying that, and then went on National TV saying Bret was like a zombie dead behind the eyes and obsessed with the screw job.

Vince should have released that burial DVD. Then WWE could make bigger asses of themselves than they did with the Warrior DVD.

Gonna be the cynical ass here and say that's for PR. I agree with Punk when he says that all these "kind" things aren't out of the good of his heart. I also remember Sunny's complaint that they sent her to a really shiny looking rehab, and then the day after Linda's election run, immediately had her kicked out and gave her the allowance for about a month of a really crappy one, then did the big PR statement after she snitched on this of "well, we gave her the chance so now she can screw it" The WWE owed her absolutely nothing. At the end of the day she was complaining about getting something for free. Wasn't Sunny sent to rehab many, many times beforehand that got to that point (IIRC, it was close to the 10-13th time WWE sent Sunny to rehab herself?) ...yeah, that also has to be taken into account with Sunny's complaint (and indeed makes it more important for the "crappy" rehab- if it's clear that someone's taking "good" rehabs as a vacation, then you have to start with the crappy ones in the hopes it'll force them to actually...you know, try to rehabilitate themselves.)

And going back to the original point, I'd bet the deeds of my house on the 2001 Stu footage being in it with a voiceover of somebody saying, "the whole family moved on apart from Bret".
