Having just started watching ROH since it came to Destination America, I'd had no exposure to them at all, as I've never lived in a location which carried their other TV program.
What's the deal with the streamers being thrown into the ring before and after each match? Is there some longtime story behind that?

It's something that carried over from many fans being ones who were big into Japanese wrestling, where that wasn't uncommon, and it was adopted by ROH fans. Also, when Jimmy Rave was around, I think they sometimes did it with toilet paper instead of streamers since he was a heel.

Yeah, back in the mid-00s the streamers were largely reserved for main events or at least for marquee matches featuring the company's biggest names...or a TON of toilet paper for Jimmy Rave.
Seems it's now gotten to much higher levels in recent years.

I don't mind it for main events. But the ROH fans doing it for almost every match gets a bit annoying.

It's a neat fan inclusion thing to show support for your faves, taken from Japan. I'm planning on some silver and black streamers for Caprice Coleman if he's booked in Atlanta in a couple months.

Streamers used to be so cool.
Now there's Stremer Guy and his mom.
And now I hate streamers.

I knew it was from Japan. First time I saw it was mid 90s when friend's uncle came back from living in Japan for right at 10 years. He was a huge wrestling fan and had recorded lots of NJPW while over there. But IIRC they mostly do it for title matches and main events. I saw a match between Silas YOuung and Donavan Dijak where the fans threw streamers. That is a perfect example of a match that didn't need them. If it happens with every match it loses what makes it special. A bunch of us have talked about throwing toilet paper for one of the local heels. He is a huge fan of NJPW and would love it. But we decided against it. Mostly cause this guy is usually opening matches and we doubt most of the crowd wouldn't get it. Hell most of the crowd has no clue what TNA is much less NJPW.

Didn't Bryan get ties thrown at him at a show when he was fired?

As a European who is big into the ultras/tifo scene in football I love the streamers in wrestling as it's basically the closest thing to that. Shame if it's now been overdone with ROH but I always thought it was awesome to make a big match feel even bigger or to show respect for a particular cult hero. The Jimmy Rave thing is hilarious.

That has to do with Silas' gimmick. He adamantly hates streamers, and swats them back or gets int he face of people who threw them.

People began to miss the point of them and started to throw them for every match instead of special moments like Joe vs. Kobashi or the Nigel vs. Bryan unification match.
They literally mean nothing now because they've been overused.

Eh, I don't mind it. Yeah, they get thrown for everybody, but it's usually pretty obvious i.e. the more streamers, the bigger the star.
