The level of WWE Cognitive Dissonance in this thread is monumental.

yes. I've nver seen another guy be given so much and still be so forgettable. he's the WWE's equivalent of the appendix; you remove him and it changes absolutely nothing.

Dolph Ziggler and Sheamus say hello, the Miz too. The WWE made all four of them main eventers but it didn't made them genuine stars, their booking seemed designed to ensure none of them have ever really had the chance to shine when their name was at the top of the card so they'd only ever be placeholders.

I'm going to disagree about all three of those guys, particularly Miz. With Ziggler, you can at least be pretty sure you'll have a physical match with crazy bumps. With Sheamus, you can depend on a match with some painful-looking moves (I don't know how stiff Sheamus works, but I know that a lot of his moves, especially strikes, look like they hurt a lot). Both of those guys give fans something to care about. Miz is a bigger asset to the roster than most; he's one of the best at getting other wrestlers over (Alex Riley, John Morrison, Damien Sandow, etc.). No, Miz matches don't set the world on fire, but if you want the crowd to care about someone, a program with Miz (whether team or feud) is one of the best ways to do it. Alberto Del Rio...what exactly did he contribute to the roster? I know he has great ring psychology and is a very talented wrestler, but WWE's style right now doesn't know how to apply ring psychology without making it boring. ADR squashed mid-carders, got squashed by main eventers, and repeated this cycle for quite a while. That's almost all he did in WWE.

I always knew people would come around to the guy. It was rough being one of his four fans back when he was still employed. Ditto.

He was the biggest channel changer in WWE to me for years, and now that I've started watching Lucha Underground, I mark for Alberto.
That has to speak volumes about "creative."

The whole Alberto Del Rio run was just utterly bizarre. The guy is talented and they obviously had a hard on for him with all his title runs/feuds, but holy crap they could not be arsed to put any thought into his booking. His AGGRESSIVE gimmick and taking Ricardo away was two of the worst creative changes made by WWE in the last five years as well.
Saying that, his role on the roster isn't missed. Bray Wyatt has been on point replicating his dull, JTTS, channel changing qualities.

If he was just a fever dream, what does that make Bam Neely?

Yeah they did a lot of really terrible stuff with Del Rio like sticking his manager with someone else they didn't fit with at all and having him disingenuously declare his love for America to be a face. Thank Christ they've learnt from THOSE mistakes.

He was part of a trend that still exists where only certain people get the benefit of the doubt in regards to booking.

Alberto had NO right to flop as a face. He even looks more like a face than a heel; he has that "cool uncle swag". But damn them, they gave him the "All-American Mex Luger" gimmick.
During the face run, he had some of the shittiest segments I've seen in a long time. Remember those promos where he and Ricardo made fun of Zeb and Swagger? Even on Smackdown, the home of piped-in crowd reactions, you could almost feel the crowd not giving a shit...
I came in here to rant because I was so sure he'd hit the big time as a babyface. Maybe I'm just salty that WWE proved me wrong so thoroughly...

The question is: in the end, did he become a big deal, fairly quick?

He's one of the most boring good wrestlers I've ever seen. I'll concede that mechanically he's damned good; but there was never anything he did that made me interested.
If anything, he's proof that the in-ring stuff is only part of what goes into making a good wrestler.
