So I asked this yesterday in the mod section and then it went through the grapevine to Meltzer's podcast today and he doesn't have a definitive answer offhand either.
Just where the hell is the actual birth of the 6 sided ring? I noticed it in No Holds Barred and can't find it existing (and by that I mean Googling) before being a prop in this movie. Surely the set designer didn't come up with it.
Just what are the origins?

The actual wresting use of the 6 sided ring was in AAA. Years before it became a regular thing in TNA.

If I recall, the movie No Holds Barred actually had an eight-sided ring, predating the Octagon.

I need the price is right losing horn. If anything Crappler El 0 M noticing that I'm an idiot deserves a cookie for being the only to point out I don't know how to count. So here's to ya. We may now use this thread for mocking me or maybe someone can dig up how AAA came up with it anyways. Either/or.

I AM interested on the idea if anybody ever used a six sided ring before AAA. And/or if not, just HOW AAA got the idea.

Hey, I'm the weird one for remembering the exact number of sides of the ring in No Holds Barred. It's not a shame to get that one wrong.

The Toryumon 2000 Project (T2P), one of the Toryumon "classes" of Ultimo Dragon's students, and it was also a promotion done for their first breakthrough in the business and they started using the 6-sided ring in 2001.
You guys should check it out if nothing else because of the Italian Connection stable (Milano Collection AT, "brother" YASSINI, YOSSINO, Condotti Shuji, Anthony W. Mori, Pescatori Yago, Venezia and Berlinetta Boxer). And yes, it is a bunch of Japanese wrestlers being Italian somehow. And yes, it's as awesome as it sounds.

I forgot about Toryumon using a 6 sided ring also. I need to see if they came up with the idea first or AAA did. Considering Ultimo was a regular in Mexico at the time, it's quite possible Triple A are the originators.

I think Toryumon was the first to use it on a regular basis, but it is possible that AAA might have played with the idea in the late 90's and then transitioned into full-time in the early 2000's.

Crazy thought but if it originated in AAA, I wonder if it had to do with bullrings. Maybe the 6 sided ring looks better in one than the 4 sided?

Whoever came up with it, we must travel back in time to stop them.

This just makes me think the eight-sided ring desperately needs to make a comeback.

Not an answer, and almost definitely not the origin of the 6-sided ring, but many of the "rings" in the old traveling/carny days before the modernization of the business in the 1930s were often very makeshift and weren't always 4-sided. They'd just throw ropes or something else up on whatever they could at times, especially the ones that were wandering hucksters (they'd also use nearby animal pens or whatever else they could).
