It seems like it is cool to hate on this guy, but seriously, is it mainly because of the Transformers movies? Now I won't say that I am a huge fan of those movies, but I will say that the best one is probably the first one, the second one sucked, the third one was slow but had a decent climax, and the fourth, well, I didn't hate it. I was entertained enough, but I was able to see its problems and in no way will I say that I loved that movie, but I didn't hate it. The weird thing about these movies is that no matter how much hate Bay gets, people will still flock to see it. Hypocrisy, much?
As for his other movies, I have said time and time again that I liked both Bad Boys movies, The Rock, Pain & Gain, and I enjoyed The Island when I saw it. I am mostly in the middle when it comes to Armageddon, and I still need to see Pearl Harbor, even though I have heard about all of the problems that movie has. As for anything that he produced, I have mainly seen the Turtles movie and the Friday The 13th remake. I can't say that I loved the Turtles movie when I saw it, but I thought of it as a time-waster at the time, and then I looked back and realized that it was not that good.
Of course, I guess maybe Bay jokes even existed long before he did the first Transformers. Look at the South Park episode, "Cartmanland," to see what I mean. Kyle made a comment about how Michael Bay gets to keep making movies. Now I could only guess the joke was because Pearl Harbor came out a couple of months before that episode aired. It could also be because of Armageddon. I don't know.
If one doesn't like his movies, that is okay, but I also find it funny how people bash his movies, yet give the Fast & Furious movies a pass despite being as ridiculous as Bay's movies, and this is coming from someone who LIKES the Fast & Furious movies. I am not a big fan of the Bayformers movies, as I have said before, but I don't hate Michael Bay like most movie fans do.

The thing is, he's not flat out offensively terrible like, say, Roland Emmerich, but let's face it, he's never going to be seen on the level of a Spielberg because he doesn't have that skill in storytelling. There's nothing wrong with his stuff if you want a popcorn flick.

I avoid a lot of his movies, but The Rock is a super fun action flick and I liked Pain & Gain.
But you want to hate Bay? Do it for the right reasons. When The Island came out Scarlett Johansson offered to do nudity and was Bay turned her down to keep a PG-13 rating.

To me he's just the guy making Transformers movies that don't resemble in the least bit the the greatness and intelligence of the Transformers franchise (particularly the comics). I hate the excuse that they are "dumber fun movies" because anyone who has read a Transformers comic book by Furman, Roberts, or Barber can tell you that Transformers works better as intelligent science fiction. There is so much depth to the characters and the universe they inhabit, but Bay wants nonsensical plots with insect looking robots punching each other, lots of explosions, and attempts at humor that are worse than WWE's.
I blame him for making Transformers seem stupid to a casual audience instead of respecting the source material and giving us an intelligent and fun sci-if series, but I hardly blame the guy for ruining movies in general or anything like that. Besides, if people actually do hate what he does so much, they wouldn't be so financially successful. I guess most people would rather see something that looks cool instead of something with a little more substance to it.

I don't hate him as much as some people do and the last time hot my money was the first transformers movie... which I thought was "Ok." But for the most part he replaces story for 'splosions, which if that's what you're looking for is great... but that's a genre that's pretty much been full up since the 80's. Also him going to uh... "questionable" stereotypes in his writing comes off as lazy at best. Hmm... and now the part of me that is still a teenage boy thinks that he is history's greatest monster.

His action sequences embody the some of the worst filmmaking techniques, with the unholy combination of overuse of shaky cam, lightning quick cuts, and extreme close-ups, which have made the big action scenes in the big dumb action movies incomprehensible messes.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Unless you're giving an example of he's not that bad?

Lots of people take things like Transformers and TMNT super-seriously because they grew up with them, even though they were just glorified toy commercials that in some cases turned out to be good for some reason. I was the same with Beast Wars, that show was the tits when I was growing up, but expecting a movie about a property that was just designed to shift units of plastic off a supermarket shelf to be taken seriously by anyone involved was just... odd.

He seems to be the movie equivalent of Dan Brown, Ryanair and Nickelback in that everybody claims to hate them and they're a butt for everybodies jokes and comments despite not actually been awful.

explosions for the sake of explosions, and over reliance on using the same type of shot for lots of his films

The Force Awakens led to some wonderful parodies. But the Michael Bay version just seemed lazy.

As far as I know, there was only one explosion scene in "Pain & Gain," but even that was not actually an action flick. Of course, there were some sequences in that movie that reminded me of other films he did, like that one scene when Wahlberg's character was talking to that porn producer, the shots of going from one room to another reminded me of "Bad Boys II." Speaking of which, while I liked "Bad Boys II," I remember thinking that the bit with seeing those two rats mating was more than unnecessary to see, same with seeing two dogs mating in "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
I am really curious about "13 Hours," which comes out next year.

Most of his movies are loud, dumb fun.
Things didn't get really offensively bad until Transformer 2, IMHO. Skids, Mudflap, Decepticon testicles, the entire first 4 hours or so of the movie where the mom gets high at college...ugh. It just wasn't even a fun movie, just loud and dumb. To quote the amazing review by Roger Ebert,
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is a horrible experience of unbearable length, briefly punctuated by three or four amusing moments. One of these involves a dog-like robot humping the leg of the heroine. Such are the meager joys. If you want to save yourself the ticket price, go into the kitchen, cue up a male choir singing the music of hell, and get a kid to start banging pots and pans together. Then close your eyes and use your imagination."
The Transformers movies do get better if you imagine that they are made by the long lost idiot 3rd Coen brother.

I can sorta see where the complaints about TMNT come from since the movie was terrible, but I really struggle to see how Transformers could be done differently than what Michael Bay did with it.

Even if you just re-write the human characters to not be annoying dipshits, you have a much better movie. Toss in a little more coherent and distinctive character design, fewer establishing shots of aircraft carriers, and more clear action sequences and you have a winner.

I heard that The Patriot was good, though, and I have only seen parts of it. I didn't care for Godzilla. I liked Independence Day, but it's been years since I have last watched that movie. I have only seen The Day After Tomorrow once, and that was in theaters. I remember enjoying it, but that was 11 years ago. I am curious about 2012, even though I've heard how bad that movie was. As for White House Down, well I'll say that I liked that one, and I know that people will give me the "Olympus Has Fallen being better, because it's more gritty" argument, but keep this in mind, I liked OHF, but for some reason, I had more fun watching WHD.

Well, for a start, they could have had good writing and characterization.

I haven't seen the first transformers movie
But the second was ok. It wasnt too bad and had a decent plot. True it was a bit long. But I liked it for what it was.
The third movie was terrible. I paused it to go to the bathroom, and just looked up how long it had been running...It said 1 hour and I said: "Thats enough of that crap" and watched something else when I came back. It was the Deep Wang scene that killed it.

Oh and let's not forget about Optimus Prime being turned into some bloodthirsty asshole who executes defeated enemies in cold blood.
And Starscream, Shockwave, and Soundwave being completely squandered as characters. Oh and the Dinobots and Costructicons.
