Because he's just plain shit, that's why.
Bad Boys, The Rock and Armageddon were all enjoyable action movies, but since then his output has been terrible.

Pain & Gain is probably his best work so far. The Transformers movies are garbage but he's not gonna stop making them unless the general public stops eating up all the garbage he serves them.

The difference between Bay and the Fast movies is that the Fast movies give a shit about the characters. They also use some decent practical effects. They are loud and dumb, but they have actual relationships between characters that feel some what organic.
My biggest issue with the TF movies is that all 4 are the same damn thing. McGuffin, big bad, crap characters, terrible designs, action shot so you can barely see terrible designs, poor dialogue, the f***ing "get out of statutory rape free" card.
Also one and four really are the same "Megatron is being held by humans and is being used to backward engineer technology, he wakes up, goes rogue and wrecks shit. Also a McGuffin that can turn anything in to a Transformer".
4 actually actively made my head hurt and made me feel dumber.
Oh, also his porn shots of military tech.

Becuase 2 and a half hour Transformer movies. Only a person with their head up their ass to sniff their farts thinks a TF movie needs to be that long

I read an interview with Bay where he said he understands his role as a director. He makes products that a LOT of people pay to watch. He doesn't claim to be an artist or try to "do justice" to anything or any particular fanbase and is largely successful at it.
He seems to be fully aware that he makes broad-appeal content for profit.
That being said, his films are largely unwatchable for me.

It's more of the fact that Bay's the kind of guy who's style over substance. He did try to be serious in filmmaking with Pearl Harbor, but since that movie was a commercial failure, I believe he decided to skip the aspect of trying to do a serious film if all everyone wanted to talk about was the scene where the bomb drops onto the battleship. People want 90 minutes of nothing but that!

The funny thing about Bay is that the attack sequence in Pearl Harbor was IMO superbly directed, with some beautiful shots (the dive bombers, the camera shot tracking the bomb heading for the Arizona, the two helpless sailors watching a torpedo heading for their ship directly below them, and the shot of the Arizona being lifted into the air by the force of the bomb).

Pearl Harbor was superbly directed, absolutely. The story was a mess, but it was a well-directed flick.

Generally his movies are pretty terrible if you're looking for coherent plot, engaging characters etc. That's not hate, it's pretty much true.
That said, since dude isn't really interested in making movies that aren't over the top, bombastic, 'junk food'; I can't really fault the dude. He rakes in the dough by knowing where his bread is buttered.

The idea that we are hypocrites is ridiculous. The people who insult bay don't make up the gigantic flocks of people going to see his movies. And if somebody who isn't a fan of his does go see a bay movie, it gives legit claim to their criticism because they saw his movie. Other wise people would be whining "how can you hate it when you haven't seen it?!!"
You just can't win.

Part of it is the Transformer films (at least 2-4) are abominably bad, but the other part is Internet Criticism can become an Echo Chamber.

The thing is, he's not flat out offensively terrible like, say, Roland Emmerich, but let's face it, he's never going to be seen on the level of a Spielberg because he doesn't have that skill in storytelling. There's nothing wrong with his stuff if you want a popcorn flick. I don't really hate on Roland Emmerich that much either, but then again, I am curious about some of his movies that I have not seen. I heard that The Patriot was good, though, and I have only seen parts of it. I didn't care for Godzilla. I liked Independence Day, but it's been years since I have last watched that movie. I have only seen The Day After Tomorrow once, and that was in theaters. I remember enjoying it, but that was 11 years ago. I am curious about 2012, even though I've heard how bad that movie was. As for White House Down, well I'll say that I liked that one, and I know that people will give me the "Olympus Has Fallen being better, because it's more gritty" argument, but keep this in mind, I liked OHF, but for some reason, I had more fun watching WHD. He made the dreck that was Anonymous, and now he's doing a whitewashed history of the Stonewall Riots. The word 'hack' just gravitates towards him.

Because that's just what we needed, another movie that manages to whitewash an event that happened in one of the most diverse cities in the planet. You had one f***ing job, Roland!

The Transformers movies would be better if they weren't so f***ing long (And the crass humour was removed)
"Age of Extinction" was decent (The humour was better) but dear god did the last 40 mins drag, By the 2hr mark I was done.
Fan edits would do these movies wonders

Because I hate the whole "lolz it's just a dumb movie leave your brain at the door!" argument. If I'm watching a movie, I'm generally going to want my brain.

I just hate how it basically argues that all big dumb action movies have to suck. Die Hard was a big dumb action movie. Aliens was a big dumb action movie. Demolition Man was a big dumb action movie. Commando, Iron Man, Terminator 2, The Fifth Element, all big dumb action movies. Big dumb action movies can be awesome. It's not a shield from criticism to call a movie one.
