Ok so I need some advice because I'm terrible at reading signals from women.
There's a cafe up the street from me and after I get out from work, I like going there for a bite to eat and it gives me a chance to relax a bit after a hard day and I go at least once a week. There's a cute girl who hosts at the cafe and for a while we'd make eye contact and she'd smile at me and I'd smile back. A few weeks ago I went in and she was there and she starts up a conversation with me and she tells me that she likes to smile at me because she thinks I look sad and she wanted to cheer me up. Once she found out I have to be up by 4am for my job, she totally understood why I look so worn out. After I eat and pay we started talking again for a few minutes before I had to leave. Last week we talked again and I think I get the vibe that she likes me. Then this morning I went there for breakfast and it was busy so we didn't really get a chance to talk much other than exchanging how are yous. However as I'm leaving she walks by me and says goodbye and she puts her hand on my arm, bicep to be specific, it was only for a second, but I wonder if that meant something other than just a friendly gesture. A female friend of mine said she'd never touch a guy if she wasn't into him. So far the main advice I've gotten is to go back and see if she does it again.
So my question to you wise people at FAN is, do you think she was flirting, or just being nice?

"Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I'm picking up on some signals from you. Would you like to go catch a movie or something sometime?"
That way, if she's not interested, you'll be let down easy and if she is, you're set.

Look
If a girl shows even the slightest interest than she's intersted
It's all about how you handle it (no pun) One thing that always works is laughter
Get a woman to laugh and you'll have it

A buddy of mine has a penchant for waitresses for some reason. I try to remind him, A)They do work for tips and B) Try to not to hit on literally every last single one of them in the bar. You're gonna be "that guy"
But hostess, yeah, sounds like she's interested.

Go for it, what's the worst that can happen?
She says no and it becomes so awkward afterwards that you have to find somewhere else to eat. You pick the wrong place and get food poisoning and because of that illness you miss bumping into a millionaire who is in need of a small favour. Somebody else does that favour and eventually becomes their best friend who inherits their entire fortune when they die in a bizarre accident involving sword fighting penguins and bungee jumping tigers.

Just ask her out, goddammit. Guys make women out to be some mysterious enigma and overcomplicate things. This isn't detective work here.

I don't say this to discourage you, I say this just to be perfectly honest.
Don't take her touching you as a super sure sign. I know several people (male and female), a lot of whom either have or currently work in the service industry, that touch people when talking to them. It's just how some people communicate, kinda like I how always move my hands while talking. In addition to that, the answer is almost always a resounding "no" when the question is, "was that waitress/bar host/bartender hitting on me?" Keep in mind, she's on the clock and being friendly to people is essentially in her job description.
All of that being said, I still say ask her out if you think something's there. Simply because...realistically, what's the worst that can happen? *shrug* Better to ask and find out than to be left wondering.

I do appreciate your honesty as I also appreciate the help from everyone who has replied to this. "In addition to that, the answer is almost always a resounding "no" when the question is, "was that waitress/bar host/bartender hitting on me?" Keep in mind, she's on the clock and being friendly to people is essentially in her job description." This is exactly what is making me step back and try to be totally sure because I've been in this sort of situation a lot and have misread it every time. I've also noticed that she's not as talkative with other customers. I'm still going to keep going back and if I do sense something is there or she gets more overt.

She already had sex with you, got married to you, had a child, and got divorced and you never noticed.
Maybe try "hey our conversations are a bright part of my day" and see where that leads you.
