Why did the Rock leave the WWE initially? Was it because he got cast in movies? If it hadn't had worked out in Hollywood would the Rock had come back to WWE, like Hogan when his movies didn't pan out??

If I recall correctly - Rock's first extended hiatus was between Wrestlemania 17 and Summerslam 2001. He left to film the scorpion King. Then he was back until Summerslam 2002 with a few short breaks here and there. He returned as Hollywood Rock in 2003 for a few months and was gone for good after that other than a few one off returns such as the lead to Mania 20 and the match there. I would assume that he would have returned if he flopped in Hollywood but there's really no definitive answer to that.

The story I'd heard 5th or so hand was that HHH basically put the kibosh on signing any part time contract with him when he went to Hollywood full time, which is why he went from showing up between things to not showing up for several years. Granted, that could have been a lie based on HHHate.

WWE claimed it was a clerical error letting his contract expire in early 2005 and apparently Rock was upset at that and put wrestling in the rear-view mirror after that.
He went to getting paid 10-times as much while taking 10-time less physical abuse so it was an easy decision once he was established A-List star. Same with Batista.

On his DVD, Rock said it was because he wanted to prove he could do it on his own.

From what I recall. The Rock first did SNL which did very well in and it got people in Hollywood attention. So he did the Scorpion King in the Mummy returns and he did well. So hollywood makes a movie just for the Scorpion King which really showed that the Rock CAN'T act compared to most wrestlers just coming off as a wrestler in a movie. Like when you see Hogan's movies it always comes off as Hulk Hogan on a movie set. The Rock didn't.
The Rock just was so good at what he did he became in demand. I don't know if the 05 contract deal was a thing or the part time deal was at thing but the Rock for a long time was so busy I can't see him being around very much even if he had a part time deal. I'm sure the WWE would loved him had him on more WMs then we gotten since 05.I can't seem them not going hard after him.

He was getting movie roles and essentially he wasn't going to be able to do both at the levels he wanted to. As someone mentioned about the HHH thing probably could have something to do with it but at that point i'm sure Rocky didn't really care if he couldn't walk into the WWE part time.
The kids movies could of been a career killer for him considering some guys don't rebound from that and they may have been stars before(Sandler, Murphy). I understand why he did it though considering his daughter was young and you want her to see you in a friendly movie. He's hit his mark now though as a guy who is getting a reliable rep in Hollywood. Same thing with Batista, he's made as far as him having the roles in Marvel and be interesting to see how he's received after the next Bond film.

Wrestlers tend to exaggerate and twist things to make themselves look better. It was actually for the best that he distanced away from wrestling to make it in Hollywood. Like if I recall, Vince and WWE Studios were executive producers in his first few films like The Scorpion King, Rundown, and Walking Tall so I imagine Hollywood doesn't want to constantly deal with Vince and his studios getting cashback. Second it was the best he established his own name as Dwayne Johnson to show he's an actor/movie star first and former wrestler second. Basically he can draw on his own rather than relying on past wrestling fame draw. It's after once he got a role in Fast Five, he knew he made it and it was time to comeback and make appearances.

Looking back at exactly what kind of movies he was making before his return, I'd say he would have come back when he did regardless, since he was getting a lot of minor roles, or lead roles in kid stuff that wasn't ever going to do to him any favours. He wasn't really setting anything on fire yet, but was pretty much guaranteed to get roles on the weight of "He's The Rock". Hell, the year before he came back to host Wrestlemania, his only two major roles had been in The Tooth Fairy, which everyone laughed at him for, and Faster, which pulled in ten million at the box office more than it cost to make. He pulled paychecks just fine, but this whole "one of Hollywood's biggest stars" thing really only kicked off after he came back, when Fast Five came out.

Only thing I've thought was weird is him insisting on being billed as "Dwayne Johnson". Don't think I've ever heard a single person outside of TV actually call him that. People that don't watch wrestling nor could they give a shit about it still know that he's "The Rock".
It's likely that it has even cost him a little money with some people hearing Dwayne Johnson is in a movie and not knowing who it is. It doesn't prove anything about him being an actor, it just proves that he's got a recognizable face and people know "The Rock is in this" while ignoring anything about Dwayne Johnson.
Would be like Hulk Hogan insisting on being billed as "Terry Bollea"
