Today is the Day - Pain is a Warning (2011)This is a very strange album for Today is the Day in that it's very normal. I don't know the backstory or what the band was going for with this album but they went with a more straight-forward alternative rock/metal sound with this album. Think somewhere along the lines of Helmet but still Today is the Day. It works well enough but there are moments that I really didn't care for what they were doing here. If I want alternative metal I'll listen to Helmet. If I'm listening to Today is the Day I want unhinged chaos. That said there are still a couple of really good songs on here. Expectations Exceed Reality, Remember To Forget and Samurai are all songs that they should still play live today. And there are a lot of moments where the Today is the Day that I'm familiar with comes peeking through. It's just so normal. If someone were to ask me what Today is the Day sounded like I wouldn't even tell them that this album existed. 6/10

Nuclearhammer - Serpentine Hermetic Lucifer (2014)This is EXACTLY what I want from death metal music these days: complete unbridled chaos, rage and mayhem. This album is just nuts. Some songs are hypnotic blastbeat driven songs seem to that go on forever. Some are short blasts of insanity that are over before you can even blink (one song The Seeds Of Martyrdom Remain Bitter Until The Dawn Of Reverted Curses is actually only six seconds long). The vocals are tortured. The drums are abrasive and in your face. The samples in between songs are completely f***ing crazy. The guitars are just the ring amount of muddy. ...this shit is perfection. 10/10

Sleep - the Sciences (2018)So how appropriate that Sleep unexpectedly dropped their first album in twenty years on April 20th? Haw-haw-haw. I don't get nor do I care about weed culture and 420 is a joke (or whatever it is, is it a joke?) that I haven't found humour in ever. So you smoke weed...who cares? Weed elitists are worse than beer, wrestling and metal elitists combined. It's. f***ing. Weed. /rant Anyway, on to this unexpected album. They've been teasing it for a couple of years now and they did release some very cryptic teasers last winter but it seemed like the day was never going to come. Yet here we finally are. And I will give the guys their due: this sounds like it could've been the spiritual successor to Sleeps Holy Mountain. It's not quite as aggressive as Dopesmoker and thankfully the songs don't drag on quite as much (I mean, how could they drag on more?). I liked Dopesmoker but it's honestly something I can only listen to every few years, and even at that I find myself zoning out by the end. So this is more like a mid-point between Sleeps Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker that should've been released in 1995. The riffs are still there but none really jump out like those on Sleeps Holy Mountain did. Vocally it's a little gruffer but really not that much. Even the timing and texture of the solos is identical to Sleeps Holy Mountain. The songs just aren't as good. That's what it comes down to. I'm sure live they'll be good but Aquarian or the Druid are going to be what drive the crowd into a frenzy. All I can say in closing is that Sleep released a perfect "Sleep album". It's like the twenty year gap never happened. And that's quite impressive in itself. 7.5/10
