Yeah, once Mitchell got involved it bad. There was always some backlash with people laughing about him being the worst of Kane and Mankind rolled into one but he was enjoyable, to me. Once they got Mitchell involved, Sting DQ title win and Mesias and all that crap it just got sad.

As it's already been said, the Sting feud and his entire horrible lifestory of 2007. You could literally see him getting fatter and sadder as the angle progressed.

Oddly enough I don't think that Sting stuff made Abyss look like a joke as much as it made TNA itself look like a joke. I do remember the "Fire Russo" chants during the Last Rites match, and then reading online that it was Dutch Mantell that booked it, to which I responded "Why is Dutch Mantell now booking like Vince Russo?" I thought the whole "blame Dutch" nonsense was a load of crap even then.
I'd say Abyss became a total joke at the time of the Hogan HOF ring angle in 2010. Say what you want about his bad angles before that but at least they sort of fit the UT/Kane/Mankind nature of his character. The whole RR 1994 silliness didn't make anyone think Taker was a joke, so why would the Last Rites match be any different for Abyss? But Abyss marking out like a little girl over Hogan's ring made him look like a fool in a way where no one could ever take him seriously again.

Ok the sting feud was the first step, specially after that casket match, but in my opinion his feud with Christian and Tomko ended up killing him. When they teased that Tomko was from Abyss's past it got me interested, they had similar tattoos at the time, but once Mitchell was revealed as his father the whole angle sucked, it was really anticlimactic, at that time I was praying Jake Roberts was revealed as Abyss father not mitchell.
Another thing that destroyed him was his own stupidity. James Mitchell calls him Willy E Coyote because he kept falling on his own traps. Then his body started shutting down.
I think also that he became a bitch after he was used in so many comedy skits. He should've never talked, it humanized him. I wish all the big guys would follow Udertaker's example, he always always presents himself as a legit badass, a monster. There's a reason why Abyss and Kane can't raise a nickle because of what they let their characters go through.

The combination of Last Rites and the Mesias feud did it for me. For some reason, whenever Russo was around, Abyss always became a poor man's Kane, and it always sucked.
