As in, a character that took a good worker and completely ruined them, made them completely unlikable and intolerable.
I would have to go with Brian Kendrick and his lame hippie, shoeless, peace loving guru/yoga instructor. Holy hell, was that bad. Felt so forced. Especially after the awesome "The" Brian Kendrick character he was coming off in the WWE.

I think that Hogan and Bischoff wanted to elevate an x division guy, I remember he even defeated Abyss, but he couldn't connect with the audience because of his character and promos. After Kendrick failed they pushed Austin Aries. I still believe to this day that the push Austin Aries got was meant for Kendrick. I pick Orlando Jordan, he could've been a positive character and needed a fresh start...then came the Monday night Massacre...the less said about that gimmick the better.

It seems like Abyss got steadily worse with every outfit change and alignment turn.

Just thinking about the wasted potential for a positive gay/bi character there makes me a little angry. I just double-checked and that whole godawful Orlando as depraved bi heel thing was happening at the same time Chris Kanyon took his own life. While I'm clearly not intending to drawn any causal link, early 2010 sure was a bleak time to be gay / bi and in or into wrestling.

I always assumed that was the gimmick Kendrick wanted to do, but I may be biased because I find him irritating and presumed that gimmick was just him in real life.

Didn't damage him long term but Nature boy junior junior AJ Styles. That failed so miserably I didn't think AJ would recover from that.
Edit: Then again they did make him the turkey man lackey.

Jeff Hardy...wait, he did that to himself. Personalizing the title belt didn't help, but man, what a train wreck.
Eric Bischoff...jobbing out to a bird.

Jeff Hardy may have done the initial damage to his career, but let's not discount Willow which probably killed what little drawing power he had left more than anything else. Nobody outside of his hardest of the hardcore fans was paying to see him revive his OMEGA Character.

I'd say of all the gimmicks he's had over time, Super Eric killed off EY's heat overall.
Say what you want about the Roode feud, they did eventually try to make him a more serious character. But then they hit the reset button at some point, gave him the Super Eric gimmick, and it went to hell to the point when they made attempts to turn Young heel and serious, (and finally pulled the trigger with making him leader of World Elite) nobody bought into it. What hurt him isn't even the fact they made people believe it was a different person, but the fact that when told to admit he was Super Eric in order to keep the tag team titles, HE REFUSED AND HE AND KAZ WERE STRIPPED OF THE BELTS.
This was after he was stripped of the X-Division title immediately winning it because of reasons I don't remember. Just wanted to remind people of that.
Then they had him suffer a concussion, turn into a comic relief again, but by then he was already damaged goods. This was just the first snowflake that got the snowball rolling.

Not exactly a gimmick specifically, but Frankie Kazarian's random monster push in 2007 made him really hard to get in to for awhile.

Even worse- IIRC, weren't there whispers around the time Kanyon committed suicide that the straw that broke the camel's back for him was Orlando Jordan doing that very gimmick (and in the process, taking the TNA spot of "first openly gay wrestler" that Kanyon had been trying to get for himself for the previous four years?)
