So the New Day are a recent example of taking a terrible gimmick that everyone hated, switching it around a little bit and completely saving it. The Rock is arguably the most famous example, from hated, Die Rocky Die Maivia to the biggest star ever.
Anyone think of any one else that started off terrible but ended up great?

Sparky Plugg ending up as Hardcore Holly. His super heavyweight gimmick was outstanding.

Aside from the Rock, Trish Stratus is probably the best example.

I didn't care too much for Umaga and Rusev when they started. Guys who had awful outdated gimmicks straight from the 80's and started off awkward and boring. But by God those two made there gimmicks work and those two shown more visible improvements every week then I have ever seen anyone else do. It's f***ing eerie on how Rusev literally became Umaga 2.0. 8 years later in every possible way.

Mark Henry's meandering, strongman shtick went from piss-break material to being one of the most compelling big-men in recent memory.

Stone cold when he first started with the stone cold name...had a separate mustache and beard....was very dark and serious...before Austin 316 caught on and he adopted redneck style his presentation was super bland.

Not an actual example, but am I the only person who feels like Mordecai could have been this, with a little bit of patience?

Not an actual example, but am I the only person who feels like Mordecai could have been this, with a little bit of patience? He did seem to get a lot more interesting as Kevin Thorn. Then they fired Ariel and put him in the New Breed and it just kind of began to fall apart bit by bit for him.

Tyson Kidd is the poster child of this.
Dude was bland as hell for years... he takes a trip to NXT and gets his "Teddy Hart" gimmick and knocks it out of the f***ing park.

I suppose Regal would count. I mean he's never been considered "awesome" in a long-term crowd pleasing way but he's gone from out of shape hard hat wearing afterthought to all round well respected wrestling machine.

I hated Miz when he first came in, especially in the Miz and Morrison duo, couldn't stand him. He won me over by the time he headlined Wrestlemania, though.

R-Truth was never awful or bad or mediocre or anything. But R-Truth going from a good above average babyface to one of the best heel characters ever is quite the contrast.

Bam Neeley, for instance, was just so bland on every level, there was no saving him. Bam Neely really didn't get to be anything other than...Bam Neely. I believe that if most wrestlers are given a certain amount of attention, whether it's with longer, more competitive matches with quality opponents or character development opportunities, they'll eventually catch on. Some guys just fall through the cracks simply because WWE gave up on the first attempt. Even a Bam Neely would get some fans if WWE "gave him a dancing gimmick" or whatever.

R Truth was all kinds of horrible until his heel turn, becoming arguably my favourite comedy heel of all time.

R Truth was all kinds of horrible until his heel turn, becoming arguably my favourite comedy heel of all time. And then boomeranged back to the being one of the all-round worst guys on the roster. What an absolute waste.
