Since WWE dropped all these gimmicks for worse ones.
We can however agree that 2011 was the best year for gimmicks.

In retrospect, heel R-Truth was a way more subtle version of New Day. The whole point he was trying to make is that shuckin & jivin like the WWE brass wanted him to do got his career nowhere while sticking up for himself got him his first-ever shot for the WWE Championship. Then it just jumped the shark when they decided "Oh instead of Lil' Jimmy being a metaphor for the kids that eat up everything Cena-related, we're just gonna make it an imaginary kid that only R-Truth sees."

Wow, there actually were a lot of great gimmicks then.
Hall of Pain Mark Henry was the defining run of his career. I don't think anyone expected to see him make it work as well as he did. Then he got hurt and they did that thing where we're supposed to buy him as a legit threat even though he jobs all the time.
Heeltruth was phenomenal and the only time I liked him.
Pipebomb Punk speaks for itself. That gave us Punk/HHH, Punk/Nash, Punk/Johnny Ace, Punk/Cena and even Punk/Vince worked-shoots. Punk even had a brief one-to-one with Austin that year.
Even though Christian never got a serious run at top, his series of matches with Orton were super memorable. Top notch work from him in 2011. Also his last consistent year before a slew of injuries/creative not having anything for him.
I think Asshole Heel Daniel Bryan is what I miss the most. I watched Smackdown just to see him and AJ. It was late in 2011/early in 2012 where it really got going, but it was a great way to end the year and begin the next one for him. For all the times WWE drags things out to the point where they're not good anymore, Bryan and AJ's relationship was far too short.

2011 is probably one of my top 5 year for WWE. It's really good. Agreed. From the Rumble on it was the 1st year since 2000 that I was regularly watching (all RAW/SD, most PPV) So many bad decisions made in this year that influenced WWE's business to this day Heel Truth, Ryder, crazy Cody, HOP Henry, face Riley and face Christian were OVER and ready to break the glass ceiling...

CM Punk is kind of dependent on a good storyline, but Crazy R-Truth could work anytime.

IMO R-Truth was the best heel of 2011. Everything from his crazy rambling promos, his anger at the fans and the "system," to the fact he didn't use entrance music all just worked. This is easily one of my favourite videos WWE ever did. He's been so wasted since then.

Thee's some pretty good ones here but I can't not vote for Christian. He managed to turn that shitty heel turn they forced after he got screwed out of the title into pure gold.
ETA: If not for Christian, count me in on the R-Truth camp. That was pure gold too. That segment with Morrison where he turned heel is one of my favorite things in wrestling ever.

I still think R-Truth should have been WWE Champion.
Even if it was a fluke, even if he lost it the next day...he was amazing at what he was doing.

Creeper Johnny Curtis isn't only a gimmick that has legs, but in all honesty is main event worthy. I'm thinking sleazy, degenerate dickbag Edge kind of role. Fandango is way too f***ing handsome and talented to be curtainjerking, if that. I will be on my deathbed crying about how much they've misused that motherf***er.

2011 was definitely the peak of modern WWE (since I started watching again in 2010)
Especially Cody!

"Do I have everybody's attention now...?"
Even not being as prominent in early to mid 2011, Punk after the pipebomg promo was THE reason to watch in 2011. Even if his promos became less edgy later on, it doesn't matter. He just came across as being on a different level than everyone else...

I'm not sure I'd exactly count Daniel Bryan as a 2011 character, considering he didn't even start his heel turn until mid-December, and wasn't a full fledged heel until 2012.
Nonetheless, heel Truth is amazing.
