Not in the sense of someone who was the antithesis of the gimmick. I'm talking about someone who almost never lived their gimmick and would drop it in public at the drop of a hat? Someone who would be mad at if they were called their gimmick/ring name in public and would only respond to their birth name? I understand this is pretty unlikely given the nature of the wrestling business but I wonder if anyone had any long term success not "living the gimmick".

I feel like Mick Foley could fit in this. He didn't really live the Mankind gimmick at all and from reading his book he seemed pretty open to being called Mick Foley in public. To be fair though, his characters blended so much into who he really was that it was harder to tell the difference. Although the fact that the wrote a nonkayfabe book DURING his prime should be enough to put him at the top of the "not living the gimmick" list.

This reminds me how recently I saw one of WWE's montages during a show of all their charity work and such featuring supserstars meeting kids, including heels (heel supterstars, not heel kids....). It made me think how weird it is showing what's meant to be your top villians in the show being actually great people, takes you out of it a bit. I think I said to my friend "Bill Watts would be rolling over in his grave at this if he was dead."

Mick Foley is definitely a guy who transcended all his gimmicks, and became quite obviously 'Mick Foley as...' whenever he appeared. But it always worked, and everyone loves Mick.
If there was a guy who ever refused to acknowledge his gimmick, I'd put money on Vince Russo being involved in the thinking process, somewhere.

I can't imagine Nick Dinsmore wants anything to do with the Eugene character.

Pretty much any superstar these days. Guys have matches on pay per view then tweet each other afterwords thanking each other for stealing the show and go out of their way to point out they are playing characters.

What, it might have sucked but that was completely the point!
Aaaaand, just read the OP and realised I missed the point... erm... I guess he didn't live the gimmick? Least I hope not...

Was it just NEWZ or was Serena really fired because she didn't live the straight edge gimmick in public?

Who would book Nick Dinsmore? I mean personally, I'd rather have the Eugene character fired out of a cannon into the sun because of how monstrously offensive I found it, but it's the only thing that ever made him any more, so even if he hates it, if he wants to keep wrestling, get the roar of the crowd (or mild applause of the bingo hall) he needs to do that character.

I'm pretty sure we all clicked on this thread hoping to mention Mordecai. I think I said to my friend "Bill Watts would be rolling over in his grave at this if he was dead." That's what I thought seeing Sahsa in those types of videos and now in non-kayfabe interviews, she seems humble and generally lovely, nothing like her Boss character. Actually the four Horsewomen in general seem to have been given carte blanche to break kayfabe at every opportunity.

I suppose Kane is a rather forced example of this just because it'd be kinda weird walking in public wearing a mask like that.

People didn't like Eugene? For real?
I loved the dude as a kid, I never thought of him in a bad way at all.
As for the topic at hand, I don't think Steiner is as crazy as people claim. Just the gimmick blending into reality at times.

Edge for sure. In his documentary he spoke about how he'd always introduce himself to people as "Adam" and hated being called "Edge" outside of when playing his TV character because he thought that was douchey.

Really?! Ugh, this company... I never heard complaints about her being too fat. The story I always heard was that she was too much of a party girl in real life, with the segment about her getting caught in a bar drinking a bit of art imitating life. I thought she was actually arrested for a DUI, but that was later on, and it was boating under the influence.
