Second 2000/2001 PPV's post of the day...
There was a run of PPV's in 2000 where it truly looked like Benoit was about to be champ and really push on. He went up against Rock and HHH in Singles, was in that Fatal Four Way with Rock/Taker/Kane and throughout the match was easily made to look the best.
So what happened? Was his timing just unlucky alongside Kurt's rise?
How did he go from being a dominant figure in the title scene to having tag matches with Perry Saturn? Not slating Radicalz because I loved them, but you get my point.

He still had the stink of WCW on him so after they made him look like a big deal/make WCW look like dumbasses for letting him walk into the competition they had to push him down the card and make him pay some dues or some such nonsense.

He became my favourite wrestler shortly after debuting all the way up until that fateful weekend.

I think the Fed were quite high on Benoit for a while, but I get the impression that his early main event run was part testing the waters for something in 01 and partly experimenting with a new face due to a lack of main event heels outside of Trips. The match with Rock is one of my underrated main events matches actually.
I honestly believe that if he handnt of got injured at KoR 01 he would have got Jerichos 2001 run.

Stephanie took over as head writer in late 2000 and everything got worse, basically.

Well, yeah he got injured, and by the time he was back there was the culture of 'oh you used to be WCW? F*** YOU!' that started during the InVasion when he was injured.

Stephanie took over as head writer in late 2000 and everything got worse, basically. This makes so much sense.

He was doing some of his best promo work, too, I think. The neck injury was severe and could have been very, very bad; but I don't think they were burying him, necessarily, when he came back. He was incapable of being buried (but of course, we already knew that; all jokes aside about the end.)

This was IMO the best that Benoit was in WWE in terms of character. When he returned in 2002, something was missing. He was no longer billed as dangerous as he was when he was the Crippler. I remember WWF magazine having a tutorial explanation on why the crossface was one of the most painful and dangerous holds in the business.
Toothless Aggression, Rabid Wolverine and 4 Real just were boring incarnations (with the exception of the Angle stuff) despite having some really good matches with most everyone, I just couldn't bring myself to care about Benoit after the neck thing. He just felt like a JTTS.

He was a solid upper card guy who had some great matches with Rock and Jericho at that time, the crowd at Fully Loaded 2000 gave Benoit heat as they pelted the ring with trash after it was announced he was the WWF Champ. It would've been cool to have him hold the belt and lose it a month later at MSG during the Rock/Benoit No DQ rematch on Raw.
