Eric Clapton has said worse than Hogan and (afaik) has never apologized. Hogans legacy is secure.

The biggest name in wrestling history pretty much. He secured that LONG ago. There's some tarnish on it sure, but he entered the pantheon of pop culture decades ago.

Eric Clapton has said worse than Hogan and (afaik) has never apologized. Hogans legacy is secure. Clapton also said it long ago, was drunk/drugged out of his mind, and there is no actual audio recording of it. What he said is horrendous, but it's a lot easier for the public to forget given the circumstances. Hogan will be remembered as the face of professional wrestling, in some ways he fits that now more than ever- larger than life, charismatic, riddled with drug/politics issues, and tinged with racism.

Jim Hellwig was terrible human being, but the Ultimate Warrior is still beloved. So there you go.

Chris Brown beat the shit out of a woman and even the woman in question forgave him. And he called Frank Ocean the f-word and assaulted him. None of this has stopped him being one of the biggest pop stars on Earth, collaborating with a number of otherwise reasonably enlightened musicians. People still listen to Phil Spector records. Austin is still worshipped. Tyson is in the Hall of Fame. Hogan's legacy is intact, because his being a racist doesn't change the fact that he is synonymous with wrestling and changed the face of it. WWE has always had an ambivalent relationship with its own history and when Hogan bites the big one (which will be sooner rather than later given that he's an 80s guy and already getting up there) he will once again be deified, because Hulk Hogan the character is not Terry Bollea the racist. And frankly, once he's dead, there will be zero guilt involved because you're not endorsing his behaviour any more or making any money for him. This. I also could not agree more about this company's ambivalence towards its history. They love their Attitude Era A-listers, but seem to also want to sweep the actual Attitude Era under the rug.

When you think of Baseball, you think of Babe Ruth When you think of Basketball, you think of Michael Jordan When you think of Soccer, you think of Pele
When you think of wrestling, you think of Hulk Hogan.

He'll be remembered like any other entertainment/sports legend.
Iconic, but flawed.

As one of the greatest WWF Champions ever. I'm not saying his recent comments aren't deplorable because they are but when you look at the history of some of the other greats, some of the stuff they have done is pretty bad too. I think that hit the nail on the head. Usually when a celebrity commits or is accused something wrong they get hammered for it until they die, then people remember the good.

The second someone famous dies, people immediately ignore the questionable or bad stuff they did (well most people). Hogan will likely be no different. Now if recordings of him making racist rants show up once a month for the next year, yeah that will probably change things but this is a one off thing that most people will have forgiven/forgotten within a year.

People remember HP Lovecraft. And people love his works despite his feelings of non-Anglo whites.

I agree with this, and I wasn't even a big Hogan fan to begin with. Though in a (much) smaller scale, reminded me a tiny bit of the Tom Brady/Pats scandals. Taping team's practices, deflating footballs, all that--still second paragraph (to me) to 4 time Superbowl champions. And hell, let's go all out with Michael Jackson as a comparison. Complete weirdo, likely a paedophile, but most still think King of Pop first, I think. I feel that what HH did, while digusting and disappointing and rage-inducing, isn't quite Benoit/OJ Simpson levels in the eyes of the public at large (ie. to thise two, I can't help but jump to the negative asap)

On-topic, he's going to get the Michael Jackson treatment. It'll be considered borderline taboo to enjoy his work in some circles, then once he passes it'll become considerably more accepted. Like Jackson, he was the biggest star of his field in the 80s and an iconic figure in pop culture. No matter how trashy he comes across in everything else, you can never take that away from him.

Fondly. The icon of wrestling. Then you got guys like kamala and even the rock vouching for him.
Soon we will see Hogan do charity work for groups like the naacp and become president of their tampa beach chapter
Honestly, the heat on him died within a week. All he has yo do is an apology tour. Retweet pics of him and black people. Then the general public kind of forgets it.
Hell he was giving quotes and sound bytes on roddy piper on the news
