Its interesting. The day Hogan's video leaked was the day of Michael Richards' birthday. The Seinfeld FB page did a "Happy Birthday" post for him and every comment was about how great he was on Seinfeld, how funny he is, and all around praise. Hogan's legacy will be restored.

This isn't a situation like Bill Cosby where his actions have nullified the importance of his career. In the case of Hogan, it can be considered a case where maybe he actually wasn't in a good mental state at the time and was spurting stupid shit because he didn't care nor thought it would ever be recorded for the world to see. And if he puts in that effort to fix this image, he'll be back sooner than later.

All Hogan has to do is publically grovel for a year, let it all blow over and he'll be back on TV in time for Wrestlemania 33.
By that time there will have been many more public scandals to be outraged about and Hogan's shaming will be long since forgotten by then.

This will blow over, but it's made a big enough stink to be in the obit.

I'm in the camp of people that think that this will be largely forgotten in a year, and will just be a sidenote of his overall fame that people might happen to remember if they choose to just like with his sex tape, nasty divorce, etc.
Consider what the news has been reporting about him. The focus was that he was fired by WWE and erased from their website for saying negative racial things. The comments themselves were treated as secondary in the reporting. Whether intentional or not, WWE probably protected him that way.
At work people sort of spontaneously brought up the Hulk Hogan news. But even though that was where the discussion started, it didn't travel in the direction of talking about how racist Hulk Hogan might be. It became a discussion about wrestling. Hulk Hogan is wrestling, and that's always what he will be. That's his legacy forever.

When you think of Baseball, you think of Babe Ruth When you think of Basketball, you think of Michael Jordan When you think of Soccer, you think of Pele When you think of wrestling, you think of Hulk Hogan. I'm English (I'm also white, a former pro-wrestler and my ex-wife is Asian - should anyone care).
So....I have no idea what baseball and basketball might be
And when I think of football (NOT soccer), I think of the astounding George Best (Google is your friend and all that.....)
But when I think of wrestling, it does look like Hulk Hogan.
In the context of our current society, Hogan's comments were deplorable. No question. I have many black (and indeed white) friends and colleagues who would be beyond appalled if I were to ever use such terminology. I would never do so, as in real life (as opposed to my in-ring heel persona) I have no wish to offend anyone, friend or otherwise.
But Hogan's comments were made in private, and I remain firmly of the view that everyone is entitled to a private life. He didn't kill or injure anyone - sticks and stones and all that.......
He knows what he said was unacceptable. He's apologised. So - just in my view - that's the end of the matter. Racism is treating someone less favorably based on the color of their skin or similar. Using offensive words is just rude and a bit dumb. And - you need to trust me on this - he's not the first pro wrestler to do something dumb.

Ghandi Wrote letters to his "dear friend" Adolph Hitler. He's not remembered as a nazi sympatizer.
Of course Hogan will be remembered as the guy who murdered a 800 pounds french giant in front of 1,002,546 rabid fans in the New-Orleans Silverdome.

Hogan doesn't think he did anything wrong as he retweeted a political tweet that basically boiled down to black people are allowed to use that particular slur but white people aren't, boo hoo hoo poor Hulkster.

Gandhi also wrote as much virulently racist stuff on his own as well. Sometimes it's not the evil that men do that lives after them while the good is interred with their bones. Sometimes it's the other way 'round.* *I'm aware how pretentious that last lil bit is haha.

That doesn't mean he's racist or that he harmed anyone. Just that he's not particularly smart and/or well advised. What about him saying "I am a racist"? "Racist" is simply a word. One from which we've all been conditioned to recoil in horror. And - whilst racism is in my view clearly a less than admirable character trait - it doesn't in itself imply that anyone (of any race) has suffered loss or harm as a direct consequence.
Expressing a view is one thing. Here in the UK we generally file that under "free speech", regardless of whether we agree with the opinion being expressed or not. This is generally known as tolerance. Tolerance - by definition - should be extended to those expressing views which differ from one's own. Actioning those views is entirely another matter, but - at least as far as I am aware - Hogan hasn't in fact done anything to deny anyone of any other race any opportunity based upon the color of their skin.
We didn't like what he said. We're grown ups, so we'll get over it. He's apologised. I have no idea whether or not that apology is heartfelt. Either way, there are far worse things being inflicted upon individuals of all races across the globe.

I will never defend what Hulk Hogan said but I'm from the country and I have heard some folks who would never discriminate against a black man in any shape or form other than the fact they will have only white friends (you can judge if that's racist or not) and out of anger would ramp up their frustrations at a particular moment by ramping up the language.
Even my own father did it and he grew up in the projects as the only white boy around. I assure you he wasn't racist yet I heard the N-word once - and only once - when he went on a rant watching Charles Barkley complain after a loss. There's some history there, as they played against each other in high school and there was a scuffle and it bubbled up to the surface 15 years later.
That is where my mind went when I read this. I don't think he hates or hated black people, or even disliked them. I just think he was mad at one and his mind suddenly lumped them all together. I won't say he was "joking" but had he known he was being filmed, he certainly wouldn't have said it.
Let's also not forget he said this when he was at one of the lowest points of his life.
Let's not forget what he said but let's not act like he's wearing a white hood, either.

Let's not forget what he said but let's not act like he's wearing a white hood, either. If you only choose to have friends the same colour as you, then that's racist. If you just haven't happened to make a friend of a different colour, then that isn't, but if you actively choose it, then it is. He could have used any other word. He could have called him a f***er, a c***, a bastard, a shit, whatever. As soon as you bring race into your insult, that becomes a racist insult. Racists in the UK like to use the term "Black bastard" and back it up by saying "He's black and he's a bastard, what's the problem?" The problem is, is that they've brought the person's race into the insult and are therefore insulting the race. It's one thing to use a racial epithet just joking around, its another to use it in an insult. He didn't want black people dating his daughter, that's racism. As soon as you disqualify someone from something open to all races due to their race, it's racism. To discourage interracial relationships purely on grounds of race is racism. He repeatedly uses a racial epithet, not in a joking around way, but in a way to convey his disgust at a black man being with his daughter. "f***ing n*****s." That's racism. Lumping all members of a race as one is racism. I've been suicidal many times, it's never made me racist.

Whilst I fully accept that your experiences and perspectives may be legitimately hugely different from my own, I'm nevertheless fairly certain that the selection of one's friends is simply a matter of personal choice. This is entirely separate from racism. As such, absolutely no-one has a right to criticise such a choice. I have been hugely fortunate in my life to encounter and form relationships with individuals from a vast array of backgrounds and cultures. I however recognise that not everyone has been afforded similar privileges.
With respect to racial insults, I'm not at all convinced that for anyone to add the term "...and you're white as well" (or similar) to any insult directed at me would make me perceive that insult to be somehow more vitriolic. Speaking personally, I would be far more concerned as to why that individual felt the need to insult me in the first instance. The skin color issue would be, at most, secondary. I am white. So how would someone (of any race) pointing this out to me be offensive? I'm also quite fat, growing old and my hair is turning grey. Ditto.
I'm certainly not attempting to suggest that racism doesn't exist. I have experienced it myself in the southern states of the US amongst other places (not attempting to open a war here, so everyone please just accept this comment in the spirit in which it is intended), and it's unpleasant and frustrating beyond words. But I remain firmly of the view that words alone do not constitute racism. Stupidity perhaps. But it's only when the ideas underpinning those words are actioned that racism occurs.
