What was the point of that exactly?
Always thought it was really f**ked up. How would that get Lance Storm over at all? The guy got destroyed for 5 minutes with Austin literally napping during his match and making the guy look like a complete fool.
Is there any story behind that whole thing?

Remember that Buff Bagwell vs Booker T was supposed to be Lance Storm vs Booker T, but somehow Bagwell got into the match instead of Storm. If you wanted to get the invasion off to the worst possible start, you would swap Buff for Lance at short notice and expect Booker to carry Bagwell. This was probably an attempt to kill Lance off for good.

I don't know if there was any ill-intent behind that segment because I had always thought that Storm's character was intentionally "boring" and "serious" as a way of garnering heel heat from the audience.
Lance was a very talented performer and one of the few bright spots in the final year of WCW, but he was never going to make it past a certain level in the dude bro frat house that is WWE. It's a testament to his in-ring ability that he achieved what he did in his time there.

It was a different time, still just coming off the Attitude Era, so there was still a portion of the audience who couldn't get behind someone if they didn't tell someone to suck it or weren't known for crazy high spots.
Storm didn't really play up the "can I be serious for a moment" gimmick in WWE, it was his WCW gimmick, in WWE up to that point he was an UnAmerican, just a worker and then that dancing gimmick.
I think if they did that now, even with the nostalgic connection to Austin, he would get booed, even if it was someone really insignificant like Heath Slater.

It sort of made sense. Get fans to chant boring whenever Lance comes out, though it's not necessarily a good thing to have everyone call you boring, if enough people are chanting it then I guess that's heat? Whether it's productive heat or not I don't know.
All I know is that the Highlight Reel where Lance read a prepared statement to counteract the chants is one of my all time favorite comedy segments. "If it's bells and whistles you're after I suggest you attend a circus." That character had legs, they never should have had him try to dance, just have him keep insisting that he's good enough the way he is.

I can't remember who said it, but someone said it was supposed to be like "You Suck" with Kurt Angle. The crowd didn't think he sucked, it was just for added crowd participation and something to get under Kurt's skin. They were hoping the "Boring" chant for Storm would be the same thing.

It led to DANCIN' LANCE. I don't know what to add to this thread other than that I remember DANCIN' LANCE.

Lance Storm is probably in my top five favorite in ring performers ever so I hated this run. Lance has talked about how part of the character was supposed to be that while he had a dull personality outside the ring, inside it,he was an amazing wrestler. However, Lawler would completely bury his matches and talk about how boring his matches were and how much he sucked. I don't think it would have gotten over regardless, but that didn't help it any.

When the writers run out of ideas, they expose wrestler's weaknesses.
Definition of useless hacks.

In kayfabe, it shouldn't matter how "entertaining" a wrestler is.

"Boring" Lance Storm is what WWE would have done to guys like Daniel Bryan pre-Yes, or Cesaro, back then and is one of the most mind numbing things I've ever seen. It is pure and simple career killing. It does absolutely nothing other than tell people not to care about a guy. I don't know if it's that he was ex-WCW or if it's just part of WWE's mentality that if you're not a LOUD OVER THE TOP VERGING-ON-OBNOXIOUS CATCHPHRASE MACHINE then you're boring and lack charisma. Go watch anything Lance Storm did in ECW or WCW. The dude does not lack charisma, he does not lack personality. But strict, serious and understated has never been treated as anything less than "lol boring" by WWE. It happened with Malenko, with Storm, Cesaro is still struggling to shake it and still gets the "he has no personality" treatment.
Lance Storm should've been more than he was in WWE. He'd never be world champ in their system but he should've at least been a solid midcard heel for the US or IC division.

It's because Storm WAS boring. He wasn't. He just wasn't booked properly. He was fine in ECW and even entertaining in WCW. And even if he was boring, it should never be mentioned on air. In such a case, you book the guy in roles which hide that weakness. It's wrestling booking 101.

It was horrendous. In WCW, they made him seem like a world beater, like someone who could be a future title contender because he's just that good in the ring... Fast forward to the WWF and we got that. Storm wasn't bad on the mic, he was the equal of Bret during the first 3 years of his world title run and as good in the ring, but it just wasn't enough.
