Undertaker was a monster who was impervious to pain, seemingly indestrictable with an eerie presense.
Papa shango limped around making oil pour out of peoples heads

I always thought that Wright lacked the passion for the actual business. Look at the time, other wrestlers didn't have other real jobs or owners of companies. His priorities were spread out between his club and wrestling.

I'm not sure who it was, Foley, Jericho or Edge.... but someone was saying the Godfather was much closer to Charles Wright's actual personality as he's a very happy-go-lucky guy. Undertaker has always had the Cool Hand Luke presence about him, so by just losing the cockiness, turning it to emotionless confidence, and it was an easy fit for Taker. So a dark, supernatural character is just not something Wright could pull off in a convincing way. He had a great persona, and I liked him alot, but I get the feeling he had to fed everything he was supposed to do and couldn't improvise or add his own insight to help the character grow. As Godfather, he just fell into the role and still does the act today as it's what he's most known for... if you had given Callaway the pimp gimmick, I guarantee it would've failed.
.... and don't lie, you want to see Taker try the Godfather gimmick once now.

Foley said it, yeah, though not sure if the others noted it, too. Undertaker did wear the Godfather pants once when his luggage had been misplaced, since I guess they fit and Godfather and Undertaker are close friends.

because Charles Wrght isn't Mark Callaway. there's no reason in the world why the Undertaker wouldn't have just ended up another forgotten stupid gimmick of the cartoon era but for Taker's dedication to the role and fantastic ring work.

Should be noted that Undertaker is or was a fan of strip clubs. Also, should be noted that Papa Shango made Warrior puke.

Brendan Burns made a great point on the Art of Wrestling. In the past 30 years, when someone says that WWE had an African witch doctor, you actually don't really know 100% sure who he's talking about because it could be a few people. They were discussing race issues, how in the 20th century, Vince had black stereotypes of the 19th century, and now that he's in the 21st century, he has black stereotypes of the 20th century.

Once Bret no-sold the voodoo curse, the character died.
(Even Bret was like "WTF, I don't believe that crap is real so why sell it as if it is?")

Papa Shango was just kind of a victim of bad luck in my opinion. He never really got a chance to get built up as after Sid quit the company they needed someone to against Warrior and Shango was really the only guy they could go with as the heel depth in the upper card scene was terrible at that point. As a result Shango, a brand new character, was thrown into the fire immediately and jobbed out since Warrior never lost. When you have a supernatural type character like that he really can't afford to take many losses because it takes away the mystique from the character. It's a big reason Undertaker was so successful, he never lost his mystique because he was booked as a nearly unbeatable monster who was impervious to pain. Shango on the other was jobbed out immediately to Warrior and then jobbed out in next feud against Bret Hart in which he even gave up to the sharpshooter which to me was the nail in the coffin for the character. Then after that he pretty much a jobber for the rest of his run. It's too bad because I think the gimmick had a lot of potential as I thought he a really good look for a monster heel as he was scary and menacing look. Now granted I was 3 at the time but he was by far the wrestler I most scared of when I was watching as a kid. However having him lose so much killed the character especially when it came to younger fans like me, because it would make you go from thinking wow this guy is very scary to well this guy isn't so bad.
