If I had to take a stab at an order of wrestlers everyone would know, going in order...
Hulk Hogan The Rock Stone Cold Steve Austin Andre The Giant Brock Lesnar Macho Man Randy Savage John Cena The Undertaker
Yeah, 8th sounds about right. So in the top 10, but just barely. Which makes sense, really. Undertaker was a big name for years, but even at his height in the Attitude Era he was still kind of a third wheel to Rock and Austin.

I believe he's the nr.3 worldwide behind Hogan and Rock
Austin and maybe Flair and Savage are in front of him in the States I guess

No way is Undertaker more famous than Ric Flair, Roddy Piper or Andre the Giant. Ultimate Warrior is debatable. He's way more known than everyone you mentioned here in Germany, zero doubts

There are way too many factors, including age groups, countries and outside exposure. Hell, I'm sure more politicians know more about Jesse Ventura than they do about Undertaker. It all depends on the audience. I will say this, though. Off the top of my head, only a select few of our deceased wrestlers received mainstream media coverage when they died. They included Roddy Piper, Moolah, Ultimate Warrior, Randy Savage, Chris Benoit and Owen Hart (the latter two for all the wrong reasons).

Honestly if were talking about The Undertaker as pop culture figure outside of wrestling? I would say not all that highly. The factor that makes him so interesting and popular inside wrestling, that the guy was pretty much always in character on air, limits him in terms of being a bigger deal outside of wrestling. Guys like Hogan, Rock,Austin,Piper, Ventura and Savage to some degree went out and did press and films and TV as slightly different versions of their gimmicks. Undertaker couldn't do that until recent years. Is he a big wrestling name? Yes very much so. Is he as big a pop culture name as those guys? I don't think he is.

Do you mean among wrestling fans or non-wrestling fans? Because if it's the later, Roddy Piper is higher up there

Dusty Rhodes got mainstream coverage, hell my mom heard about it.

I think now taker is probably top 5. Think my non-wrestling associates would struggle with the name Ric flair...but be aware of who the dead man was. (Example just for scope)

I forgot about Lesnar, he has to be right up there too.
It must be because wrestling, aside from the Attitude Era and ITV Wrestling was never mainstream here in the UK but I'm baffled by the notion of Flair or Dusty being bigger stars than Undertaker. They might not know his real name or be able to point him out in a line-up, but the name 'The Undertaker' is very well known. Heck over here in the UK any Attitude Era stars such as The Hardy Boys, Dudleys or DX would be bigger than Flair or Dusty.
Of course Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks are still what a lot of people think of whenever wrestling is mentioned here.

It's a name a lot of people will recognize. Though to be honest I think a big reason for that is that both he has a goofy-ass name and he's been in the same company for close to 3 decades.

My list would probably be:
1. Hulk Hogan 2. Rock 3. Stone Cold Steve Austin 4. Randy Savage (as long as he has the Macho Man tag) 5. Andre the Giant 6. Roddy Piper 7. Ric Flair 8. Brock Lesnar 9. John Cena 10. DX (as a whole)

Taker is one of the most famous here by name recognition here in the UK. When the WWF had its biggest peak over here (1991-93) he was one of the most recognisable wrestlers. A lot of people know him from that period and when I tell people I watch wrestling I frequently get asked if Taker is still wrestling. Same thing in Germany, Undertaker is HUGE here.

Jesse Ventura definitely needs to be on the "most famous to non-fans" list, and possibly Sgt. Slaughter.

He's way more known than everyone you mentioned here in Germany, zero doubts Kind of the only one remembered from the only time wrestling was any kind of "hip" in germany in early 90ies.. A typical conversation with a 40 year-old is like this: "Aah wrestling, yeah I remember... Undertaker!"

My stepson knew Undertaker before he even knew what wrestling was.
Before Hogan, Andre, Rock, Austin anyone. He somehow knew Undertaker.
Don't know what that means on the grand scale of anything, but that's how it started for him.

I think what helps Undertaker is that his name is known among anyone who has watched wrestling if even for just a short while in the last 30 years. A guy pretending to be an undead professional wrestler is a pretty hard thing to forget. The absurdity of the gimmick kind of makes him a symbol of how goofy wrestling is, while those in the know understand he's royalty. He's gotta be top ten if you ask me.

Yes but how many of these non wrestling fans accidentally refer to him as Grave Digger half the time?
