I think Vegas keeps proving that they really can't support a franchise for any stick and ball sport.
That being said, I agree that if it had stuck around it probably would've merged with one of the arena leagues at some point.

I kind of wish either The Undertaker or Bray Wyatt wore a San Francisco Demons jersey for their WrestleMania match!
I would have gotten into the XFL a whole lot more if they had a Massachusetts or New England based team, but I find it hard to get into sporting events I don't have a vested interest in one of the teams playing. Sure, I'll watch games without a vested interest (I tend to watch other NFL games during the weekend that don't involve my favorite team. And any college football game because I went to a Division 3 school). But they tend to just be background noise. The closest I got to a "favorite" team would be either the Las Vegas Outlaws or the San Francisco Demons. Outlaws because I thought they had a bad ass look and name, and who didn't love the brashness of "He Hate Me"? Demons because again cool name and look. Plus I remember watching a Demons game on TV at my uncle's house in SF on a family vacation back in March of 2001. The closest team to me was the NY/NJ Hitmen, but I refuse to root for a New York metro area based team. But I do respect that the fact that they went by NY/NJ instead of just playing out of Jersey but calling themselves a New York team.

The XFL could have worked if they would have dropped the our league is tougher than the NFL gimmick and just played football. XFL was dead when they started injecting story lines. I remember watching a game and Jesse Ventura questioned a call a coach made. Instead of letting it be, they sent a reporter to the sideline to get the coach's opinion of what Ventura said, instead of letting him focus on the game. I didn't watch a single second beyond that, although I might have finished that specific game. I believe it was the coach of the New York team who didn't go for it on fourth down and Jesse went on and on about it in the booth. New York went on to win the game and Jesse went down to the field after the game and was badgering the coach about it and the coach had a "Are you freaking serious we won the game" look on his. Probably. The only thing I specifically remember was the coach saying "Good. Good for Jesse" when he was being interviewed/badgered

At one point we may have gotten the greatest interview ever with Bruce Pritchard saying to Rod Smart, "He Hate Me? I LOOOVE YOUUUUUU!!!!"

I'd like to think a few more teams would spring up and the XFL would become like the "Indy wrestling" of pro football. They'd be a nice place for either college players who didn't get drafted by the NFL or even high school players who are talented but won't play for a college team because they have no plans to go to college. It would be somewhere where players could play football professionally on a smaller level for much less money than the NFL pays and "live their dream" without necessarily getting rich or gaining "baller status".

I always thought that XFL could have worked if Vince was a silent partner, just used it as an investment. They had a lot of things inplace, like broad cast network deals with NBC and UPN and a cable deal with I want to say TNN(which became spike), but when XFL started to bring in WWF/E commentators, gimmics like the opening 50 yard dash/ go get the ball deal, and attitude era ideas like the LA's team Cheerleader Hottub, most of the mainstream people were expecting a WWF/E version of football instead of a legitimate competition.

Vince should have just bought into an existing NFL team.

Vince should have just bought into an existing NFL team. The way the XFL came about IIRC was Vince was offered the chance to buy a CFL team. Vince instead tried to buy the entire league and was turned down flat. So instead he decided to start the XFL and compete with the NFL. If you really think about it, it's amazing how much ego and craziness it took for the XFL to form.

The opening 50 yard dash doesn't sound like a bad idea so much as just something to differentiate XFL rules from traditional rules.

As a teacher pointed out to me when it was very obvious there was no second season, it didn't succeed because McMahon bases everything on hype.
It works when you got wrestling matches that are about 5-10 minutes long, but not when the competition at hand makes up the entire show.

IcoPro, WBF, The XFL, I'm fascinated by Vince's failed projects. Come on McMahon, give us another stab at something outside of Wrest… I mean "Sports Entertainment"

Well if it was properly established. Then its just a matter of keeping it simple and focusing on the on field product.
I think Vince would have blown it though as everything in WWE was over the top, so I doubt he would have been able to tone it down for the XFL

The Pittsburgh Steelers probably wouldn't have Ben Roethlisberger, and wouldn't have taken Troy Polamalu.
To explain, the Steelers signed Tommy Maddox in 2001 because of how he did in the XFL. After Kordell Stewart struggled in 2002, the Steelers benched Stewart and gave Maddox the starting job. Maddox went on to lead them to the playoffs. So going into the 2003 NFL Draft, the Steelers had a QB that just led them to the playoffs, so a QB could wait. Because of that, that freed them up to draft Polamalu, and they took Big Ben the following season. Without Maddox, the Steelers probably don't make the playoffs (I know they got to the AFC Championship Game the season before), which results in them taking someone like Boller, Leftwich, or Grossman.

Here's a fun fact: Bobby Singh won a Super Bowl as a member of the St. Louis Rams practice squad, The XFL's Million Dollar game as a member of the L.A. Xtreme, and a Grey Cup as a member of The B.C. Lions!

XFL was doomed from the start. The NFL holds the market on all the elite football talent. The guys who don't make it and get cut from the practice squad are the ones who end up in Arena Football and these other fly-by-night football leagues. It's essentially like watching the second half of a preseason NFL game. No thanks.
The only scenario where a football league could theoretically work is a feeder system that acquires college-aged football talent directly out of high school, pay them, and give them a limit of five years in the league before they either go to the NFL or bust. And even in this idea, it's likely not feasible because college football is based on tradition, alma maters and quite a few located in markets that could never get an NFL franchise so they represent their state or city (Nebraska, Alabama and Oregon for example).
