Sting is getting a title shot for coming out of a box and attacking Rollins. People regularly get title shots for interrupting a champion.
What happened to actually earning them?
Just to be clear I don't have a problem with Sting getting a title shot, just the way it happened.

Batista left his Tips and Tricks magazine with the code for unlimited, unwarranted title shots behind and there's a cabal of people who take turns using it, which precludes anyone else from competing, sadly.

Wins and losses mean nothing nowadays, and it sucks. There should be an unofficial ladder you need to climb before you get to the top, but nope

For a time there used to be a ladder. But that was back when the Intercontinental Title and King of the Ring, and later, MITB actually were a part of building a credible superstar. Now its the midcard which means everyone but 5 or 6 guys who will only get a shot for no reason. I guess you could say the same about those other 5 or 6 guys who are in the main event.

I am unsure who would even be in a match to determine a number one contender for Night of Champions. The most deserving guy is Brock but that won't happen. Everyone else has been roaming the mid-card until they are needed for a main event feud. Parity booking has basically kept everyone besides Cena (Owens being the only clean loss and that was months ago) from gaining any momentum necessary to challenge for the title. Bray lost to Roman/Dean, Roman lost to Bray, Owens lost to everyone, Cesaro lost to Owens/Cena, Rusev lost to Roman, Dolph lost to everyone, Sheamus lost to Orton, Orton lost to Sheamus, Dean lost to everyone (including Big Show!). Seriously, everyone in this company besides Cena and Brock are booked to look so average.

In theory, things should be looking so competitive with everyone being able to beat everyone else on any given night, but instead it just draws attention to the people who DO win regularly and whether or not they're good enough to deserve it or not.

Technically, Brock should get another shot at Seth. He was screwed by Taker.

WWE used to be like a league table, you win and go up the rankings.
Now it's a pre-season friendly tournament where the big names get invited to play amongst themselves with some occasional cannon fodder to make up the numbers.

They don't need them. If you want a title shot all you have to do is interrupt the champ's promos and either attack him or cry about a rematch.

Batista'ing your way into title matches is not only encouraged, it's allowed!

#1 Contender Matches are a pretty outdated and overused concept anyway but...why exactly is Sting getting a WWE title shot, lol? I got no problem with guys just receiving title shots based on their momentum recently but it's gotta make sense. They don't acknowledge TNA so, for all intents and purposes, Sting has wrestled like once in the past 10 years. A MATCH HE LOST.

Any match that Hunner has actually won in say...the past 8 years or so, is not canon. It makes thinking about this stuff a little less stressful, you know? Or...since I should be more generous, any matches in the past 5 or 6 years.

The mid-card title contention policy is pretty simple: Beat the champion in a match in order to earn a rematch where the stipulation is that if you beat the champion, you get a shot at the champion for the title.

I'd love for them to explain why HHH and Steph are giving Sting a title shot. A guy who was feuding with him like, 5 months ago.

The Authority is either helping Seth Rollins win at all costs, or making him "prove himself" by giving him tough challenges. And it just changes month to month depending on......?

Just like everything, they use it when it fits the story they want to tell.
