I've been thinking about it for a while now, the way Hunter talks about NXT being a revolution in wrestling and the fans in general treating it as a thrid brand how would you feel if eventually they started portraying NXT as an actual alternative to the WWE? Could we eventually see a Triple H led NXT vs. a Stephanie led WWE in the biggest (kayfabe) battle of the brands to ever grace the wrestling world? It would make things far easier to orchestrate with possible huge talents jumping ship and the ability to create hot dream matches and allow them to happen exactly when the iron is hot. Sounds good to me.
Now of course NXT right now is just developmental brand and really there is no evidence to suggest that WWE vs. NXT will ever really happen but it's a fantastic thought that it could happen and could create a major shift in the current dynamic of the WWE overall. The performance centre would of course continue as a feeder system but instead of feeding to just NXT it would feed, like the debut of Braun Stroman, both brands and storylines could even come about from battles to sign top prospects coming out of the centre. Maybe somewhat like Bischoff and Stephanies fight for Steiner?
Anyway I've rambled enough, WWE vs. NXT? Yay or Nay and what could come out of such a scenario?

Well the money still ends up in Vince's pockets so not sure why people can see them as an alternative brand.

It would be the brand split all over again with Raw being the dominant brand even though the 'rival' is the one getting all the praise. The fake competition won't force Raw to up it's game from a booking perspective, all it will do is cause Vince to strip NXT and use it's stars to bulk out the Raw undercard the way they dismembered Smackdown every year until it reached the point it could no longer recover.
People need to get it through their skulls that Raw will -always- come first as long as Vince is alive, it came first when Smackdown and ECW were around, it came first to the PPV system, the part of the broadcast product that actually makes them money, and still does with it's successor, the Network. NXT will at some point be completely eviscerated for the benefit of Raw and I don't think anyone really wants that to become an angle, especially not a McMahon family drama angle because the product has been built around that for approaching 20 years. Getting Vince, Steph and Hunter off TV for good and an end to 'evil' authority figures for a year or two would do far more good for the overall watchability of the product than feeding NXT to Raw.

I don't think it'd be a good idea. It's very likely to happen though.

A story where NXT actually takes over could be interesting except for a number of things.
1) it's still the developmental fed. You move too many main guys to balance it out and it suddenly loses its relevance as developmental.
2) The WWE will be the faces and NXT the heels. Which is dumb. You know this is how it will be booked.
3) NXT has a major issue when the storyline ends. It can't just go back to being developmental after that.

It'd have to be just a few people, not a whole faction or NXT altogether. You get a lot of people involved and it demands to be the heel side of a main event feud (or else it looks like the large group is making little impact, which harms everybody involved). From there it just depends on who they feud against. If they could keep Kevin Owens dominant for a little bit, it'd work if you got Zayn/Balor/Joe (or switch Itami out with Balor or Joe or something) altogether to get back at Owens for injuring Zayn. And maybe Owens gets a couple people to help defend him but eventually the 3 from NXT pull it off.
But that's just me spitballing. They pretty much pulled it off as well as they possibly could with The Shield.

I can't wait to talk about how Triple H stopped the NXT invasion all by himself. They won't do it because it's their developmental stage and WWE is good at repeating something that works, even if it no longer works 5 years later.
