As in they're not from your area, you have no childhood history with them, etc.
As for me I can't help, but be interested by the New York Islanders. They've just come to be perpetual underdogs. And yet unlike other perpetual underdogs they still have had that one dynasty from the 1980s. Hopefully the move and new ownership benefit them.

I guess it'd be both the teams I cheer for the most, the Denver Broncos and Michigan Wolverines. With Denver, it was them debuting their current uniforms, drafting Brian Griese out of Michigan and taking a trip through Colorado around that time and loving it. With Michigan, it was 3rd or 4th grade and I love the color blue, loved the idea of Wolverines and it wasn't anything Texas. Since then it has only grown.

I'm a diehard Manchester United fan.
My dad doesn't like soccer. I have no familial connections to England.
When I was 8 (so 1990), I came upon a soccer game on TV one morning and I was taken aback by how stupid I thought the name "Crystal Palace" was, so I decided to cheer for the other team and it happened to be United.
That's how I became a supporter.

I don't live near them and don't have any family connections or anything to them, But I always have a soft spot in my heart for Newcastle. Definitely my second favourite team.

I'm from West Virginia so we have no professional sports teams. Most people in the state tend to cheer for the teams from Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, or Cleveland as they would be geographically the closest unless you're in the southern part of the state (then it would be Charlotte). While I have no problem with any of those teams for the most part, all of my favorite teams are more in the Midwest. I'm a fan of the Detroit Lions in football, Detroit Tigers in baseball, Indiana Pacers in basketball and Chicago Blackhawks in hockey. When I was younger and just getting into professional sports, those were the teams I chose. I can't even tell you why really. I was just drawn to them. Now, almost 27 years later, I remain a fan of all of them.

I'm a diehard Yankees fan, but I've got nothing but respect for the Cubs. I always love a good underdog story.

Manchester United. I live in the USA, it's just that England has a much higher quality of play than we do and the Premier League is broadcast here as well, so...
Boston Red Sox. Became a fan when they got Curt Schilling and then won the World Series a couple years later.
University of Michigan. Mom's from Ohio, dad's from Kentucky. I'm also from Kentucky but I wanted to be different and just go for a college in a different state entirely.

Newcastle in English soccer. I am not sure if they are in the premiere league, I just like the beer.
Some English teams with names I find humorous:
Nottingham Forest: Just because one of the first international soccer games I saw was the MAN U 8 - Nott 1 game. Crystal Palace: Just sounds a bit absurd Sheffield Wednesday: Sounds like a 80s New Wave Synth Pop band. Or maybe a Smiths/early emo cover band.

I always cheer for crap teams in the World Cup, like North Korea or Togo

Denkinger's WORST CALL EVER aside, I have mad respect for the Royals. Having family in KC who support them doesn't hurt either, plus I liked George Brett and Bo Jackson growing up.

The Anaheim Ducks, because of their Disney history, and the fact they are called "Ducks". I admire a team who are whimsical, unlike those other teams with nasty tough guy sounding names.

Colombian national football team. I've loved these guys since the '94 World Cup.

I became a Green Bay Packer fan because of how badly Dan Snyder runs the Redskins. Became a fan in 2008 because I wanted to cheer for the one team that will never be ran out of town and hasn't been poorly owned. That and I liked their new starting QB, Aaron Rodgers.
Not really an NBA fan, never watched a game by myself, but I love the Atlanta Hawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwks' twitter page so I guess they are my NBA team.

Live in Manitoba, so don't really have a local NFL team so ended up following the Colts around the time Manning was drafted and have been a fan ever since.
Even tho we have the Winnipeg Jets back now, the NHL team I support most is still Toronto because I became such a diehard fan of the Leafs after the original Jets left, that I couldn't switch allegiances when the Jets returned. I support the Jets, but at the end of the day I'm a Leafs fan through and through and they're the ones who gear is plastered all over my house

I'm from Southeast Asia, where soccer is huge, but similar to America, the local leagues just do not compare in quality to the European leagues. The Premier League has always been the most popular league, and back in the 90's Manchester United was the dominant team. I'm generally inclined towards not supporting the most dominant teams in any sport, so I decided to support their biggest competitive rival back then... Arsenal.
I still support Arsenal 17 years on, but over the past few years have become a bit self-conscious about, as OP puts it, having no real reason to cheer for them. For example, I try to avoid using "we" when referring to the team, and have diluted my interest in English soccer by watching a lot more soccer from other countries (also helps that they're much more easily available these days).
Right now, I have started to take an interest in the Indy Eleven in the NASL. Definitely not from my area (2 hour drive from home and 80 minute drive from work), but still the closest soccer team to me now that I've kind of settled in central Illinois.

Always like to see Lotus do well in F1, think Grosjean is a very underrated driver and Maldonado is always worth a laugh at his misfortunes.
