I graduated three months ago, and got a job 40 miles from where I live. I did not want to go through the hassle of moving, and also the city where I work at seemed pretty awful, so I decided to stay at my place and make the 40-minute commute to work every weekday. Most people I've mentioned this to are surprised that I travel that far each day, and wonder why I don't move to a place closer to work. On the other hand, I've just been looking up long commute stories online and some of them make mine seem like child's play.
Anyone here with commutes that long? Would you consider 40 miles and 40 minutes (mostly driving on the interstate) each way too long? If not, what's the maximum distance and/or time you would be willing to travel to work or school everyday?

if you time it wrong it takes 2 hours to get 5 miles into NYC so 40 min for 40 miles seems like a blur

It's even worse if you don't drive on Long Island to get to places because the bus system is horrible, the trains are just as bad.

I drive 82 miles each way. I usually don't hit traffic at least so can make it in an hour and 10 minutes. With traffic though it can be a major pain.

I would kill for a 40 minute commute. It takes at least an hour for me to get to work in Manhattan from Brooklyn on the subway for what is approximately a 13 mile distance. When I lived on Staten Island it could easily take two and a half hours each way to get to various parts of the city I was assigned to using public transportation.

It takes me 45 mins each way to commute.
15 min walk to train + 30ish min train ride. I love it though. I get a lot of reading done both ways.

Depending on the traffic, I've got a 30-40 minute commute. I was briefly on a night shift, which took the ride home down to about 20 minutes when I could bomb down I-95. I miss that.

I had a friend who used to commute about an hour an a half each way to work. He ended up getting a job closer because that long of a commute really gave him too much time with himself, according to him. I hated driving 35 minutes to work, so I moved to a place where it's 15-20 minutes (I was moving anyways, but that was a factor). I couldn't imagine having a commute of an hour or more.

My longest was about 30 minutes. But got a friend that does 1 1/2 hours to work and then the same back 6 days a week. Currently for me to get to the nearest store,a tiny gas station right off the interstate is 20 minutes. And to get to town is about 30 minutes.

Takes me over an hour every morning to get to work by Train.
I'd hate to do that by car... especially as it would require me to drive into Manhattan... and f*** that.

Old job had around 30 minutes to 1`hour commuting there, and more or less same time going back home during the night shift. Day shift double that amount. Pretty much most buses here, if I'm taking that, are standing room only most of the time, and I usually end up standing on the entrance stair-thing on the bus with nothing to hold on to.

I'm ~50 miles from Boston. Depending on what time I go in, it could be 40 minutes or 2 and a half hours. I only do 3 days but even that can make me nuts.

My 15 mile trip takes about 30-35 minutes. Barely stopping as there are few lights and they are timed well for me. But even that I kinda hate, after working 8 minutes from home for a number of years.

My take from this is L.A. Traffic isn't as bad as you New Yorkers.

I still want to move back to a big city eventually. Now I know long-hour commuting is one of the trade-offs I'd have to make.
On the other hand, I wouldn't have to pollute the environment as much as I do. If I had better public transportation options, I'd definitely use them.

I have a 30 minute drive, but it's all either interstate or highway driving. This summer it's been backroads since they have been working on the highway.
My wife used to drive an hour and a half to and from work. I wouldn't do that. Especially in the winter. I guess you could crash at a hotel if it got too bad, but an hour and half could turn into 3 hours real quick.

used to work in St Louis and if you timed it wrong/got unlucky it took so long to go anywhere I literally switched careers and moved away.
Now i drive 90 seconds to work and maybe once a week I'll actually have to come to a complete stop at a Stop Sign. Took a LOT of stress out of my life. 100% worth it for me. Your mileage may vary.
Get it?

About an hour for me in Chicago, whether I drive or take public transit.

I did a 2 hour commute by train to my old job. It was bad enough when everything was on time, but with the amount of delays and cancellations due to weather/general mishaps it was just exhausting and ridiculous. I wouldn't do anything more than an hour after that experience, unless I absolutely had to.

I used to commute an hour each way to work. Wasn't worth moving there on its own merits but my wife worked in the opposite direction so we wouldn't have really gained anything
