Saw it twice in theaters, and this is my third go round.
I really love it. It may not be as fun as the first; but I still really dig it, and would put it right alongside the best of the MCU flicks yet. Granted, I'm an Ultron fan, so that may play a role. But still, it had pretty much everything I wanted it to have.
I'm still sort of baffled by the lukewarm reception it got.
But re-watching it got me jazzed again about Civil War.

I think Age of Ultron's reception was as much fatigue over the Marvel system and the seemingly incraesing trend of middle movie as it was an indictment over the movie, and I understand the backlash. Even with the good movies, phase 2 came off as a big advertisement for phase 3, and I think there's starting to be some fatigue over paying 8-10 bucks per person per movie to see all the movies required to understand the crossover.
That said, of all the recent middle movies, I think they did the best job of making it distinct and giving it it's own identity. Ultron was a very well done character, although Vision was lackluster to me. I wish they'd have done more with the Captain America-Mjolnir seen, but they may be building up to something later with that.

My only complaints about the film are Natasha/Bruce and Pietro dying. Such a waste of a character, and such a creepy, forced romance.

I thought it was insanely meh, and a huge letdown after the really strong Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. Maybe forcefully hyping Phase 3 was a part of it, but really nothing clicked for me...
-Just general fatigue of Tony Stark after 5 movies of him
-The brutal Bruce/Natasha romance
-That Natasha backstory basically making her redemption being something that out of whack
-Ultron at times coming off like "Hey guys it's James Spader voicing a bad guy!" and his really weird/dumb introduction
-Aaron Tyler Johnson being crappy in a big blockbuster again and Olsen being underused
-The CGI fest that was the final battle
-The stakes never really felt like they mattered and it never felt like Ultron was all that much of a threat

The movie just felt there. Like everything just felt there except you can feel the burn out in Joss Whedon. K they are reunited for some reason with no clear explanation. Tony Stark in five minutes makes Ultron and made a big whoopsie and he's suddenly evil and off to destroy humanity. Everyone sighs and goes dammit Stark lets fight him I guess. The spectacle is gone from the first Avengers, there is a lack of humor, the characters aren't playing off each other well like in the first Avengers film, like outside of Hawkeye getting a backstory and a bigger role, nothing progresses. Ultron felt like such a filler villain just like that main villain who wasn't Loki in Thor 2.
Then Vision is created in a polar opposite 5 minutes oopsie but with good results. Ultron is cleared easily and hardly seemed like a threat who barely caused any real damage or seemed threat and The Avengers B Team is formed. Like there really wasn't many memorable action moments, memorable spectacles, memorable funny moments, epic moments, or anything. Hell there was barely an introduction to Quicksilver and Scarlette Witch and they even seemed to be quickly thrown in without much of a character. Hell that Bruce Banner and Black Widow romance felt so tacked and forced on just because.
Captain America Civil War already looks more like an Avengers movie than Avengers Age of Ultron and probably should be retitled Avengers 3 at this point. Plus based on the hype it already seems to be checking off more boxes that Avengers Age of Ultron should of checked off. Like a real sense of danger, progression, characters playing off each other, conflicts between members advancing the storyline, more new and more A-List Super Hero introductions, etc.

He's signed on for both Infinity War movies already. Those are the last one he's contracted for. I do see them throwing money at him to remain as Cap in some capacity. It's camp rubbish. Like most Marvel movies.
Hoping Civil War won't be another toothless quip-fest. I liked Winter Soldier and it's the only one that has had any shred of long-reaching consequence so far.

Not as good as the first one, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Honestly, I've enjoyed all of the MCU movies so far.

My biggest complaint is that it was like the Borscht Belt Avengers with everyone trying to get as many quips in as possible. In the first one, everyone got funny lines but they were all done in character. In this one, you could have had Quicksilver delivering one of Cap's lines with no real difference.

Certainly higher stakes than subjugation under Loki's rule. Now, the execution may not be as good as the first film, but whaddaya gonna do? |
