It hasn't gotten coverage from a major news organization yet, but it's been trending on Facebook and Twitter and is starting to gain some attention more and more as the day goes on.
Basically, a high school in Saint Louis has a transgender individual in their school. Transitioned to a female. But, she still has a penis, which doesn't really change a thing, with how it really costs top Deal or No Deal briefcase amounts of money (thousands of dollars) to pay for medical procedures, she still wants to be identified as a female with female pronouns and everything, but the deal is that she wants to shower and change in the female lockeroom, and also use the female bathroom and the students and the staff has exploded into a rage of mayhem. A mass protest with hundreds of students happened earlier today, students leaving class, sitting outside, and chanting loudly, with some people supporting the transgender individual, but the majority of students protesting something like this happening because "she can identify however she wants, but biologically, she's still a male." And also, "that the girls would be scared out of their wits to have somebody with a penis in the lockeroom with them."
If it isn't worth it to discuss a situation like this, then lock me up mods.

Discussion should be fine, just respect each other's opinions and don't go too deep into politics.

Not condoning segregation, but shouldn't most schools have private bathrooms/showers in cases like this?

Schools should have individual cubicles for changing clothes and showers, for males and females regardless of their original biology. That would protect everyone's privacy. If the issue is safety, then have a teacher present to monitor everyone.

As a trans woman, it's kind of fun to know that me using a public restroom as casually as possible is the type of thing to scare people out of their minds.

So it begins.Such a slippery slope when it comes to this subject, I can say I understand how it would make them uncomfortable and agree that she shouldn't be allowed to be in the female locker room, but it still sucks for the student. As more and more people come out as transgendered, literally the only thing that can be done is have a seperate room for transgendered people, in schools or anywhere else.

It's especially absurd because people with agendas have time and time again tried to find instances of someone "identifying" as something to try to get unfettered access to people in washrooms, etc, wolf in the henhouse kind of thing. I don't think a single case of it has actually come up that could be validated, just fear mongering.

A complicated problem over a simple issue. Hrd to discuss because anything I say or ask contrary to the trans cause will cause me to be called bigoted and ignorant. But, I can definitely understand the issue the kids, and more likely parents are having. Anyhow, someone post the John Oliver video.

Why is it even an issue that a trans person can use the bathroom of their identified gender?
Women's bathrooms don't have urinals.
Trans men that haven't had surgery can't use urinals.
A trans person is almost always going to be going into a private stall either way, so what difference does it make? And if someone is going to commit a sex crime, cis, trans, or otherwise, the little figure of a man/woman and a sign that says "MEN'S"/"WOMEN'S" isn't some magic barrier that keeps them from going inside.

I assume the solution they'll probably try and reach would just be them opting out of phys ed. The bathroom issue on the other hand, I dunno.

Your pee is seemingly a mighty weapon of destruction. Really, the world governments should be harvesting your urine to put in water balloons to throw at people.

If I were a high school girl, I'm not gonna front like I wouldn't be offput about showering with someone who has a penis.

Tangentially related, but this thread inspired me to look up the history of legal precedents for intersex people (formerly referred to as "hermaphrodites") in America and around the world. From what I've read (and this has just been a half-hour's worth of research, so if I'm wrong please correct me) In 1847 in Connecticut, after a doctor examined a gentleman with both sets of genitalia who self-identified as a man, it was ruled (and decided by one vote) that he would be recognized as a man and entitled to all the things a man's entitled to, and the rest of the country kind of went with it.
The only real major recent ruling on intersex was in 1999 when Columbia ruled parents weren't allowed to consent for their children to have genitalia-altering surgery.

I'm sure this issue will be handled by adults in a completely reasonable way that is respectful of the probable hell a teenager dealing with gender identity disorder must go through on a daily basis courtesy of their peers.

I can understand high school aged kids feeling uncomfortable. They are immature kids for the most part, they have no grasp of how these issues affect people but that makes me question the school. Is the school doing anything to educate or promote understanding or are they trying to force it to work (if they are even going to allow it)? This lady deserves to be treated for the lady she is but there needs to be some sort of work done with this class (and let's face it, future classes as well) to help them understand what is actually going on.

If they actually looked at the reality of the situation that trans kids are far more likely to be assaulted then to assault anyone, it would be a non issue. But the lack of education and awareness about the very real problems trans people face in almost all spaces (even LGBT ones) make things even harder.

What's all this concentrating on peeing business. It says the student wants to shower and change in the girls locker room. Unless there's been a huge change in the layouts of locker rooms since I was in high school, some schools pretty much make the students pretty much have one big shower. If they have individual showers then I don't see a problem. Then again, in high school I didn't want to shower with the rest of my damn gym class anyways.

Not condoning segregation, but shouldn't most schools have private bathrooms/showers in cases like this? It depend on how old the school building is. My old high school was atleast 30 years so there wasn't no private bathroom/showers, just one for male and one for female.
