Hopefully I can't be the only one who plays the game. After a few repeated trials and errors, I finally managed to get a small understanding on how to play the game. Anyone else play? And if you do, have you encountered some of the FUN that the game is known for?

I don't play, but the game has some of the funniest bugs and oversights ever, particularly stuff like monstrously powerful fish, due to swimming increasing your strength, and them constantly swimming, to where they became incredibly strong.

That was fixed, I think, but there's still a ton of insanity to be had within the game. Such as training dwarven children to become super soldiers when they reach adulthood by locking them in with years worth of dogs to fight.

In any case, good god, this game is not friendly at all to beginners.

It's more fun to read through some of the let's plays they have, in any case. Quite a bit that I've read usually involved a lot of fire and magma.

I remember reading through the entire Boatmurdered story a while back, which was the very definition of "that certainly escalated".
Always wondered if it would either inspire or Dwarf Fortress itself would produce a more user-friendly version somewhere down the line. Like if Minecraft started off as ascii symbols and stat tables, that's kind of where DF is at.

Well, there's a couple of few programs that can assist with the layout. Like there's one that you open while you're running a game, and from it you can assign what jobs that the dwarves will be eligible for. It helps a little because the layout for doing that in game can be somewhat tedious.
In theory, playing the game is simple if you have a basic idea what to do:
-mine the area, both for gathering basic resources like stone and ore, and making room to create workshops and whatnot -cut down some trees, as logs are one of the basic resources for crafting items and are also used as building materials on some buildings. they can't be used on forges, since they burn. -gather plants if possible, for food. -make a farm; there's one you can make underground and one you can do outside. either way, aside from food, plants and gathered fruits can be turned into booze. all dwarves, including children, prefer booze over water. -make a workshop to make furniture and trading goods. you can make beds and assign rooms to your dwarves so they won't sleep on the floor. -oh yeah, assign stockpiles so items can be properly organized. -if you find ore, you can smelt it if you have charcoal or other fuel sources (wood doesn't count as a fuel source), and from there you can make more things.
Now, in execution, it's a whole lot more headache inducing.

Finally learned enough to survive a whole year, and chaos reared its crazy head. Migrants arrived, and during the times when I was still failing to learn in the game I got at most four or five migrants. So of course that after building a rather stable base I get around 20 migrants, increasing the population to over twice the amount, and that's not getting into the livestock that they brought.
On the bright side, I suppose this should at least balance out the surplus of booze the fortress has churned out.

Like if Minecraft started off as ascii symbols and stat tables, that's kind of where DF is at. People did try. There's a reason why Dwarf Fortress has been in development for ten years and is still an Alpha, the game requires so much coding and stuff running in the background that any attempt to create a simplified version has crashed and burned.

Best advice that I can give you is to have the elves pissed off at you. Not just because f*** Elves but because they value cloth and barrels more than the rare animals that they sell. So if they like you then I hope you like cloth and barrels

So if they like you then I hope you like cloth and barrels So far, the cloth they traded is all right because I needed lots of bags, and in the long run clothing. Farming pig tail for cloth doesn't seem to yield that much at the moment. But elves still suck due to their short jokes and general snootiness. Also, current region has been quite favorable in minerals. On the same depth, there's magnetite, lignite, and limestone, so I can smelt iron and steel plus a steady fuel source - gonna need to assign a second smelter so I can mass produce me lots of steel and iron furniture. Also some green jade to cut and trade out. Food wise, been preparing lots of easy and fine meals so that starving won't happen for a long while. On the other hand, I haven't taken to account proper defenses yet. Got a military squad training around, but I lack traps and a proper defensible position. Need to build walls around the outer entrance of the base for safety. And somehow, despite the recent migrant boom, there were no nobles to bother me yet.

One trick for spotting ambushers is building a tower then chaining up an animal on top of it. Ambushers will generally make a beeline for anything out in the open and so a sacrificial dog/cat/chicken can make a world of difference. Other than that, build chokepoints or ways to cut off entrances.

The outer fort is just a trade depot beside the hill the fort entrance, so there's really no defense right now. Need to start forging weapons and armor to arm my squad, as right now it's just one macedwarf and 9 wrestlers.

I've tried playing it twice, and both times ended up going "oh, screw this!" after roughly ten minutes. I'm just patiently waiting for your tale of the inevitable tantrum spiral, or when you invite the Circus to visit your fortress.
Is that Youmu taking Komachi to Suplex City?

Is that Youmu taking Komachi to Suplex City? It'll be a long time before the circus comes, I hope. Also I kinda learned by just trying to learn things one at a time, piling one failed fortress after another. Yes, she is. Also, I know exactly where that avatar of yours is from! *leery eyes*
