Is there an athlete who has such a fanbase despite not being very good? He had one okay game in the playoffs and apparently that's proof he's a winner.

It's not just the playoff game, he was great in college. He won a Heisman, and was part of 2 National Champions, do that at a big time school, and that school's fans will follow you. It's like that with sports cards as well, guys from big time programs even if they flame out in the NFL or NBA, are always going to have people buying their stuff.
If he were to change to fullback, he'd be on an NFL team in a heartbeat. For some reason he wants to stay at QB, despite the fact he can't throw, and at fullback he'd probably be a starter for a lot of teams.

Never mind that nonsense, I want the full story of him and Hernandez as college roommates. One is a conservative Christian and the other is a violent sociopath, they're the original Odd Couple!

Tebow, to me, has always been a great player but a lousy QB. He just doesn't have an NFL level arm and can't read defenses. The guy is a great athlete and one of the most clutch guys in a pinch, but that won't cut it in the pros. I really think he'd be better served learning fullback or tight end.
Also, it's hard not to root for the guy since he's so dann likable. It's not his fault ESPN never stops talking about him.

I have been rooting for the guy. I think he is a good role model (not the Christian stuff, he is a mature no responsible adult). I think he is a great leader and plays hard every single play. But the fact is he simply is not as talented at his position as the NFL demands. I wish it were different but test after test he has failed. He will be a great story for years after he is done, but he should stop this now. It has almost become a trope (his repeatedly being signed and failing). The hype is even wearing off. Nobody covered it this time compared to previous attempts. I think it's time to go back to the SEC network Tim

I do love how Demaryius Thomas gets no credit for outrunning the entire Pitt defense to score the winning TD in the playoffs.
Nope, all Tebow.

He's a QB that was never a great thrower, was more of a bulldozer/FB type than a blazer like RG3, Mariota, or Vick(in his prime), and hasn't faced a legitimate NFL defense in years yet he still keeps trying. Good for him for chasing his dream and believing in himself and all of that, but the dude could be starting at FB or TE somewhere and still getting to play QB in specialized packages.

To answer the OP's question, easily Anna Kournikova. She never even won a singles title.
Tebow gets a bad rap, and I figure part of the reason is that he's left handed, which is not ideal for today's "progressive, rapidly changing NFL." Plus he's not a great thrower (dat completion percentage tho).
He should try split TE or RB if he wants to be successful. The great ones adapt to the situation that is needed to succeed.

Dunno about the OPost, but there has never been a player who highlights football fans' double standards of what "greatness" is more than Tebow.
And I mean that directed at Tebow haters who love to have it both ways depending whose name is on the back of the jersey

He really should have elected to try being a fullback/big H-back. The fact that he has minimal ability to throw means that teams would have to respect the possibility of a trick play every time he is handed the ball and it actually would make use of his real talent on the football field, his ability to run with the ball.

I don't even know how big his actual fanbase is. He more or less seems like yet another ESPN created project.

I am sort of surprised that a team that is in rebuild mode/on the bottom of the league standings hasn't signed him to boost ticket sales. You could give him a 2 year contract, try to develop a QB, and save some cap space.

College fans are very loyal to the players that do well for the team, add in Tebow being a massive star in college, and his fanbase isn't something ESPN created.

The question with Tebow is why is he so much more popular than say Matt Leinart. Josh Freeman who was a great college QB and a good starter for years in the NFL (Seriously Dolphins you think Logan Thomas is better?) may have just had his last chance and it seems no one cares but Tebow people seem to care a lot. I know he may just have the IT factor but out of college lots of people said Leinart had that to. Every year in the NFL once popular and promising College QB's get cut some this year even had as much or more NFL success than Tebow so how is it that Tebow is more popular than all of them. I can't think of another QB who almost made it being this popular.
